Summary
The New York Times Bestseller!

After decades of silence, Robyn Crawford, close friend, collaborator, and confidante of Whitney Houston, shares her story.

Whitney Houston is as big a superstar as the music business has ever known. She exploded on the scene in 1985 with her debut album and spent the next two decades dominating the charts and capturing the hearts of fans around the world. One person was there by her side through it all—her best friend, Robyn Crawford.

Since Whitney’s death in 2012, Robyn has stayed out of the limelight and held the great joys, wild adventures, and hard truths of her life with Whitney close to her heart. Now, for the first time ever, Crawford opens up in her memoir, A Song for You.

With warmth, candor, and an impressive recall of detail, Robyn describes the two meeting as teenagers in the 1980s, and how their lives and friendship evolved as Whitney recorded her first album and Robyn pursued her promising Division I basketball career. Together during countless sold-out world tours, behind the scenes as hit after hit was recorded, through Whitney’s marriage and the birth of her daughter, the two navigated often challenging families, great loves, and painful losses, always supporting each other with laughter and friendship.

Deeply personal and heartfelt, A Song for You is the vital, honest, and previously untold story that provides an understanding of the complex life of Whitney Houston. Finally, the person who knew her best sets the record straight.

I loved this book so much. I've waited years to hear from Robyn. I felt her authenticity, her love for Whitney and her absolute truth in what she experienced and what life was like for Whitney Houston. I found myself very emotional at times. Excellent and worth the wait. I'm happy Robyn narrated it herself.

AMAZING story. Such an in-depth and real to the bone analysis of a life of a star, Black (un)realities in a racist world and non-heteronormative love. The fact that she reads the text herself gives it such a personal energy, I cried often - and I feel with her, with them…I can’t believe this side of famous Whitney Houston’s story wasn’t listened to earlier. Lives could have been saved if anyone would have cared to listen. Cared to care for Black women. I feel for Robyn and am for ever thankful she shared her story with the world. Definitely an elder to look up to

The book did justice to the author's friendship with Whitney. It does not, in any way, sound like Robyn Crawford exploited her experiences in exchange for money or to stay relevant after her friend's death. The only downside of this audiobook is that there's absolutely no sound effect to make the narration more real (ie: doors slamming, phone dialing, fans cheering, all those lively noises). And -- certainly due to copyrights -- no music excerpts too. Since I was discovering Whitney's music career through the book, I had to pause several times to look up the songs on Youtube. I'd say, the book is very good! the narration is good too. But the flat recording would make it difficult for me to replay this audiobook twice. It's my first audiobook on this platform, though, so I don't know if all the other books have zero sound effects like this one. Hopefully not... I'm used to listening to narrations with good sound effects montage that makes me feel like I'm really into the story.

The storytelling was phenomenal. It shed a lot of light--in a non-defamatory way--into not only the life of Whitney Houston, but into the life Robyn Crawford, a true friend of Houston. Though it was a "tell all," I found some aspects to be very inspiring for my own personal life.

A well-written and narrated book. I really enjoyed listening to it several times over. It was so refreshing to get the true story in Robyn's own words. Her version of the story I can trust, since I knew she was right there with Whitney to experience things firsthand. Great work, Robyn! You did Whitney proud.

Great and honest history of two wonderfull, unique girls, their friendship, understanding and support struggling in the world of prejudice and pressure. Worth to read/ hear to better know Whitney Houston but above all how important is just to be oneself in life!

I loved the book. I felt it was pretty open and divulging. I do feel that Robyn could have shared more of her own salacious deeds…. Nevertheless, she clearly loved Whitney. I’ve been waiting on hearing from her since I read the book by Emmons back in the 90’s!! I didn’t care for her narrating. I thought that she should have been more emotional at times…especially it being her actual story.

The book was an eye opener. I'm an extremely hardcore Whitney fan and I read this and my heart pained hearing how much Whitney went through. But I appreciated Robyn telling her story. I wish I could have learned more about Whitney. Also, I wish they had been in touch more with each other, but I understand Robyn's distance. I really wish Whitney had taken better care of herself, but I think she was trying to cover up the extreme pain. This made me love her even more. Robyn, you did your best and you were a great friend and I truly believe Whitney is exactly where she wanted to be...just like in the book, she went on to meet Jesus who she found was so cool. This a great read, the narration was great and hearing it in Robyn's voice made it real.

Thank you Robin. Thank you for telling your truth and honoring Whitney with love, appreciation and Respect. This is the best book I've read about Whitney because we see and feel who she was. A daughter, sister, wife, mother and most of all a friend to everyone who crossed her path. Every other book and movie wants us to only see the demise of her greatness without the true explanation of who or what was behind it. No other artist of such magnitude has had their life riddled with lies and falsehoods. Her legacy of talent should not be defined by her addictions but by her triumphs.

It's a good book overall, but Whitney's life was kind of boring with all the drugs - it was repetitive, and it seems there's a lot left out. In the Whitney documentary, the family and friends and exs mentioned her dating and having sex with a lot of men and women around the time of the first album. Most of it was left out in this book. Also her plastic surgery was left out and only hinted at when Robyn stared at a white brace on Whitney's nose once, which may have been something else. Breast implants and an entire fake denture-like plate of teeth were in the coroner's report, so it's factual. Bobbi Kristina publicly said before her death that there was awhile when she hated her mom. All of that part of life was not addressed. A lot was left out.
