Summary:

Commander George Samuel Kirk was aboard the Enterprise under the command of Captain Robert April before his famous son was born. Starfleet has just been founded and the Enterprise has just been built, and is sent on its first mission.

The mission takes the Enterprise into the heart of hostile Romulan territory, where cosmopolitical machinations and advanced weapons technology will decide the fate of a hundred innocent worlds.

Great book! One of my all time favorites that I've listened to repeatedly, this story makes the enterprise seem like a force to be reckoned with. It also gives us some insight into Kirk's upbringing and where he got his attitude from: his father. James Doohan does s great job narrating as always, and Leonard Nimoy's inclusion helps it truly feel like a Star Trek story. All in all, a well written adventure, and even gives a small nod in its own way to the Kobayashi Maru.
