I really appreciated finding out about the beginnings of foreign missions to other lands by way of men stirred up by the vision of Samuel Mills. Because ‘America ‘ was pretty much just the colonies at that point, this also included the wilds of Western New York. It was very inspiring to hear how Mr Mills first point of action was to explore new areas and then to bring back the report to the Churches and the missions and Bible Societies which had begun due to the influence of the men like Samuel Mills who had such a burden for people who needed the gospel. He, and those who travelled on the exploratory journeys with him, also took Bibles, which were well received, especially by those who had travelled there to settle. Part of his exploration covered the lands between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico, including the lands around the Mississippi River Delta which was settled by the French. He had hoped to explore South America to discover the need there for the gospel, but was not given the backing he needed. Eventually, this reluctance changed and others were sent. Although his life ended when he was only 35, he was able to go and do similar exploration in West Africa. His life was amazing, but he followed where Christ led. The way he intentionally worked to inspire others to go became a testimony that continued to influence down through the years, even when his name was no longer remembered. Having voraciously read books about missions since I was quite young, I am amazed that I had never heard of him! But perhaps he was mentioned in the biography of Adoniram Judson since he was one of the group of young men,who with Samuel Mills, implored their teachers of Harvard and Yale and etc to back them in their desire to go to foreign lands. The narrator read the book well.
