Skarde is the Scion, blessed with the blood of the Berserker, and capable of tearing a battalion of men apart with his bare hands. But the blood is as much curse as blessing. The Scion cannot be controlled. Given freedom, they will kill everyone in their path, friend or foe. For generations, only the first-born children of the Rune tribe have been able to calm them, though it's a temporary fix. Eventually, every Scion kills his Keeper, and then the clan puts him down.

Navi's fate is decided at birth: soothe the savage Berserker until you're eventually ripped to shreds. Sometimes the Keepers last a decade, but Navi isn't naive enough to believe he's on anything more than borrowed time. What's worse is that his Scion is charismatic and attentive, as if no one told him not to get attached to the person keeping him alive, and Navi is falling hard and fast for the savage who is destined to kill him.
