Petra checks things for a living. She's the analyst at a Zurich bank who reads the ledger nobody else opens, and right now one line in a little weaving co-op's loan file is four hundred francs off. She still can't sign it.

So she spends her own vacation days on a flight to Peru, where the co-op's address turns out to be a man fixing boots in a market stall. Nobody in Pisac will quite say where the wool comes from. In the end she's pointed toward Kusi, who takes people up past where the buses stop, very kindly if she plans to file a report.

Two days up the mountain, somewhere after her phone gives up, is Suyana. They don't write their accounts down there. They tie them in knotted wool cords, and the woman who reads them swears a knot tied by someone who was guessing feels warm in your hand.

Petra's flight home leaves in nine days. The fog closes the pass in sixteen. She came to fix one number and had not planned on caring this much about whether a piece of string is telling the truth.

A cozy travel fantasy about llamas, warm kitchens, and the slightly embarrassing business of letting a place change your mind.
