The Sweeper of Loray: A Cure That Changes Everything

On a remote world dismissed as primitive, a quiet ritual hides something that defies everything Professor Carver believes about intelligence in the galaxy. When a dying hunter is restored in moments, Carver is forced to confront a contradiction he cannot ignore—yet refuses to accept on its own terms.

What begins as curiosity turns into a ruthless pursuit. The promise of a substance that heals any wound and extends life pushes Carver and his assistant Fred toward a choice that cannot be undone. As pressure builds, the question shifts from what the discovery is worth to what they are willing to do to possess it—and what it might cost them personally.

Robert Sheckley delivers a sharp, unsettling story that moves quickly from observation to confrontation. The tension comes not from the unknown, but from how quickly certainty collapses when faced with undeniable evidence. Each step forward forces a harder decision, until the final outcome leaves one man with everything he wanted—and a truth he cannot allow to exist.

Robert Sheckley published widely in Galaxy Science Fiction, Astounding Science Fiction, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Known for stories such as “The Seventh Victim” and “Protection,” he built a reputation for blending dark humor with biting commentary on human behavior. “The Sweeper of Loray” reflects that same edge, using a single discovery to expose how far someone will go to defend a belief once it defines their life’s work.
