Summary
One life-changing summer, Charlie meets Fran...David Nicholls's highly anticipated new novel, narrated by Rory Kinnear
In 1997, Charlie Lewis is the kind of boy you don't remember in the school photograph. His exams have not gone well. At home he is looking after his father, when surely it should be the other way round, and if he thinks about the future at all, it is with a kind of dread.
Then Fran Fisher bursts into his life and despite himself, Charlie begins to hope.
But if Charlie wants to be with Fran, he must take on a challenge that could lose him the respect of his friends and require him to become a different person. He must join the Company. And if the Company sounds like a cult, the truth is even more appalling.
The price of hope, it seems, is Shakespeare.
Poignant, funny, enchanting, devastating, Sweet Sorrow is a tragicomedy about the rocky path to adulthood and the confusion of family life, a celebration of the reviving power of friendship and that brief, searing explosion of first love that can only be looked at directly after it has burned out.
“Nicholls is fabulous on first love and Kinnear's narration strikes the perfect balance between teenage defiance and vulnerability.” DAILY MAIL
'Such a beautiful book. Captures perfectly a moment in time we've all experienced.' GRAHAM NORTON
'He's such a genius. His novels are relatable and recognizable, but also surprising, breath-taking and life-enhancing' NINA STIBBE

In general, not a bad book, but not a brilliant one either. Some parts were entertaining, funny even, while other were weak and uninteresting. Narrator did a good job of bringing the story to life, although annoyed by his high pitches in parts. Although the book describes the hardships and awkwardness of first loves and growing up, it always seemed to me the author also had an idea to try to educate the reader on the Shakespearean works and its interpretations. Almost as if trying to revive the literature for the younger generations. However, the assumption is that one should already be acquainted with Shakespeare's works in order to understand it and follow the story. Not a bad combo overall, but wouldn't pick the book up again.

Excellent narrator, though he needed to control his volume at times when doing other accents. Great story with hints of family hardships and the miracles of growing up. Go for this if you want a 'feel-good' title to enjoy.

I'm so disappointed by this book. I've read paper versions of the authors other books and really enjoyed them, so I looked forward to starting this. the narration was dull and didn't in anyway enhance the story. I actually found it flicked onto other chapters as I really was bored by the story. I'm saddened I didn't connect with this story

Easy reading, but not superficial. He deals with the potatoes of first love with sympathy and understanding. And all ends happily ever after...!

Beautiful in its simplicity and turn of phrase. A very moving story, made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes.
