I saw my husband off to work then knocked on our landlord’s door. I had my hair up in pigtails and wore my shortened school skirt and a white blouse tied around my waist like I’d done with my work shirt for Mr Dan yesterday.

“Hi Mr Brant,” I greeted with a smile. I kept my hands behind my back and my chest thrust forward. I was twisting my upper body side to side to off.

“Miss Richards. Right on time. Come in,” the man offered formally and ushered me past.

I dropped his envelope of rent money on the telephone table and kept walking into the lounge room. He closed the door and followed but stopped to watch me.

I had another envelope and flashed it. “I’ve been misbehaving and I’m here to report for detention,” I said and dropped that envelope on his chess board coffee table.

“Is that your confession?” he asked evenly. “I’ve seen how filthy you’ve been, young lady.”

Another ball of tingles burst in my belly. I blushed deeply and smiled. My ex-headmaster approached and picked up my envelope of printed diary pages.

“Yes, it’s my confession for you to read later Mr Brant. For now I’m here to do the detention without protest.”

The man opened a drawer under the coffee table and took out a wooden ruler.
