Before the Internet. Before artificial intelligence. Before space travel, robotics, and the atomic age, visionary writers were already imagining the future.

Collected here are ten classic works of early science fiction from the first decades of the twentieth century— stories that explore technologies that were not yet invented, worlds not yet discovered, and questions that remain as urgent today as when they were first written. In these pages, readers will encounter mechanical beings, alien intelligences, cosmic voyages, environmental catastrophe, and societies transformed by technology.

These authors wrote decades before cell phones, computers, or nuclear power existed. Yet their stories often feel startlingly modern, anticipating concerns about automation, virtual communication, artificial intelligence, and humanity's dependence on machines. More than historical curiosities, these tales reveal speculative fiction at its most prophetic: not because they predicted the future perfectly, but because they understood something enduring about human nature. Technologies change. Human beings do not.

Featuring stories by E. M. Forster (The Machine Stops), Murray Leinster (The Runaway Skyscraper), Clifford D. Simak (The World of the Red Sun), Garrett P. Serviss (The Moon Metal), David H. Keller (The Threat of the Robot) and other pioneers of the genre, this anthology invites readers to discover how yesterday's visions of tomorrow still speak powerfully to our present.
