Summary
A mysterious young widow arrives at Wildfell Hall, an Elizabethan mansion which has been empty for many years, with her young son. She lives there under an assumed name, Helen Graham, and very soon finds herself the victim of local slander. Refusing to believe anything scandalous about her, Gilbert Markham discovers her dark secrets. In her diary Helen writes about her husband's physical and moral decline through alcohol and the world of debauchery and cruelty from which she has fled. This passionate novel of betrayal is set within a moral framework tempered by Anne's optimistic belief in universal salvation. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is mainly considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels. May Sinclair, in 1913, said that the slamming of Helen's bedroom door against her husband reverberated throughout Victorian England. In escaping from her husband, she violates not only social conventions, but also English law. (Summary by Wikipedia)

I loved the dramatisation, with different voices for the characters. I felt that Gilbert could have been a little more careful about punctuation. All in all, delightfully presented.

I read this book many years ago but on coming across its history and the social message, I decided to “read” it again with greater understanding. I’m glad I did. The style is very old fashioned and moralistic and at times, you want to scream : “get on with it” as they fumble through the niceties of Georgian or Victorian England. The use of various narrators was great although clearly they are not professionals. This didn’t detract too much and I thought Helen was really well done. This is not a lighthearted book but I think that a well brought up girl like Ann Brontë either had an incredible imagination or experiences that no parsons daughter should have been exposed to. I was amused at the tampering of the little boy’s wine. An interesting take on how to make sure your son isn’t an alcoholic!

Of course it is slow compared to a modern novel as most novels are from this time but still enjoyable. The narrators are quite good for a LibriVox recording.

Interesting to listen to a book and compare to other books by Bronte sisters. A long but nice storyline. The narration by multiple people was a bit unusual and though quite nice for Helen and Gilbert, it was not consistent and equally good for other characters..

Long but good. Loved the vocabulary. The story is so different from today and yet so similar.

Wonderful book. Reading is decent but some of the characters voices don't match the character and some of them are difficult to hear due to poor sound quality. I would rather have listened to one reader throughout.
