A touching and intimate correspondence between Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, offering timeless wisdom and a revealing glimpse into their lives

Though Anderson Cooper has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a year-long conversation unlike any they had ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other.

Both a son’s love letter to his mother and an unconventional mom’s life lessons for her grown son, The Rainbow Comes and Goes offers a rare window into their close relationship and fascinating life stories, including their tragedies and triumphs. In these often humorous and moving exchanges, they share their most private thoughts and the hard-earned truths they’ve learned along the way. In their words their distinctive personalities shine through—Anderson’s journalistic outlook on the world is a sharp contrast to his mother’s idealism and unwavering optimism.

An appealing memoir with inspirational advice, The Rainbow Comes and Goes is a beautiful and affectionate celebration of the universal bond between a parent and a child, and a thoughtful reflection on life, reminding us of the precious insight that remains to be shared, no matter our age.

Historically fascinating and emotionally stimulating, I enjoyed both sides of this wonderful book. Thank you for sharing your extraordinary mother with us, Anderson Cooper.

  • Mary R.

I just love Anderson Cooper. His voice is soothing. I watch him every night, sometimes twice.

This was a really nice way to gain some insight to two really unique, semi-mysterious people. I enjoyed the bits of info they shared. I feel like there were some significant gaps, but you can't cover Gloria Vanderbilt's 92 years in 5 cds, not to mention the additional 40-something years of Anderson. It was a nice format, and I'm sure as they mention it opened up a large amount of further conversation between the two of them.

Fabulous intimate account of Gloria Vanderbilt's life as she remembers it. She and her son Anderson Cooper speak from the heart about their family, and do so while also expressing their own perspective and opinions about various family events. As this book was written by both Gloria Vanderbilt and Anderson Cooper it is a deeply personal and I believe an honest family history. The fact the authors have also narrated the book allows the listener to be able to truly feel the emotion in this family story. This is especially true when listening to Ms Vanderbilt speak of her memories. Their mutual respect and love becomes very evident while listening to them recount their stories. I enjoyed every minute of this book as it allowed me such insight into the lives of two people I admire. I appreciate that Ms Vanderbilt and Mr Cooper were kind enough to share their interesting and rather intense family history with us, the listener (reader).

Excellent story that is told so honestly between a mother and son "whom I had no knowledge of as I live in Europe". I feel that the story is being told directly to me. Great incite into the life of someone you felt had it all where riches are concerned and the truth is money doesn't solve everything. Only Love and the challenge along with it is a good prescription for happiness. May they have many years ahead together as mother and son.

Well written and narrated, with a historical telling of Gloria Vanderbilt's analysis of her childhood experiences and Anderson Cooper's interpretation of the Vanderbilt lifestyle.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. It was touching, real, funny at times and heartbreaking at others. I recommend this listen to anyone who wants to experience every emotion. I have mounds of respect for this family. Definitely worth it!

  • Susan Greenberg

I could not believe how open Gloria was about her past. As usual Anderson excelled, he asked all the right questions. I loved it!

  • Moises Martinez

I'm a fan of Anderson. Now that I know his and his mother's life story I admire him even more. Their lives are so inspirational. Listening to their voices made the story more real. Moises Martinez

This book opens up a new paradigm of relationship between a mother and a son. This is not just a story of a beautiful woman and her successful son. I realized that there is so much to share in our hearts and who is a better person other than your own blood. I am determined to create a similar relationship with my own son. Thank you Mr Cooper and Ms Vanderbilt for sharing your story.

I'm used to hearing Anderson Cooper pontificate and it was interesting to hear about his background and framing but I really loved hearing Gloria Vanderbilt's story. Yes her life was amazing but it was her perspective from 92 that fascinated me! I especially loved hearing these 2 narrate .

  • shakaib khan

  • fay sampson

This was a good read but a great listen!!! I loved it!!! I already knew about Gloria's background but it was so very interesting to listen to her explain her feelings and choices. Her optimism and love of life after such difficulty and tragedy is simply inspiring!!!

  • Donna Mik

Loved every minute! Such a beautiful way to learn about a parent and visa versa. I hated for the story to end. Beautifully done. Thank you for opening your hearts and story to all of us.

  • Susan Everett

Listening to this book made me feel like I was sitting in a parlor with Gloria and Anderson while family lore was being shared. Very intimate, personal, and at times heartbreaking. I enjoyed thia book very much.

  • Aimee Dearing

I like them both very much and learning about gloria Vanderbilt's childhood which in so many ways is sad and lonely was something very interesting to learn on the other hand past that I don't think there was any great revelation that I found out in this book. It's a quick easy read but I didn't love it as much as I thought it would. Anderson Cooper asked his mother most of the questions so we really didn't get a great insight into who he is.

  • Kristy Snaith

I loved that the book was read by Gloria AND Anderson. I thought the book would be about both Gloria and Anderson, but the book was mostly about Gloria. There weren't any details abut Anderson's current life with his partner, there weren't hardly any details about Stan and Chris, Gloria's first two children and their relationship with Gloria and Anderson. They talked about Carter and his death, but not the other two boys.

  • Marcy Morgan

I really enjoyed their story and the format of the book. I hated to have it end. I wanted to hear more. I also loved that they narrated the book themselves. It felt like they were sharing their story with me.

  • Margaret Mahoney

Sensational! I hated for it to come to an end. Wonderful story well told .

  • Lesley Gill

Anderson cooper is such an amazing story teller and after reading this book you can see where he has received his talents. It is a fabulous story I recommend to all. It came at a crossroads in my and helped me to move through it. Thank you audio books and thank you Anderson cooper.

  • David Adams

Beautiful! This is a fascinating glimpse into these two brilliant people, and a powerful lesson in understanding, healing, and forgiveness.
