Summary
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books-the only bookstore on Alice Island-has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go.One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children's section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: “I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.” A search for Maya's mother, A. J.'s rare book, and good childcare advice ensues, but it doesn't take long for the locals to notice the transformation of both bookstore and owner, something of particular interest to the lovely yet eccentric Knightley Press sales rep, Amelia Loman, who makes the arduous journey to Alice Island thrice each year to pitch her books to the cranky owner.

I didn't set out to enjoy this book, it was just supposed to be background noise as I packed my room. However, I soon found that I was hooked as each character was introduced in just the right way, at just the right time. I love books myself and was drawn in through all the quotes, short stories, and little clues along the way. Give it a chance and you may find you love it too.

Beautiful heartfelt story. Sometimes life gives you a whole lot of lemons and it can make you sour. Sometimes life throws in the sugar too, to help make lemonade.

It took a me a bit to get into the story and the characters, but once I did, I didn’t want to put the book down.. I thought the writing was very imaginative and heartwarming, and the characters quite human.

I enjoyed the book very much. I also enjoyed the narrator very much as I could feel the emotions of despair and joy through his voice. There were a lot of unexpected twists and turns that added to my enjoyment of the book. In times like these when we are self quarantined, I am thankful that we have Audio Books.

A.J. Fikry has been dealt a number of hard blows in life. First, he loses his wife and then a prized possession. In an unforeseen turn-of-events, A.J. Fikry's circumstances abruptly change . His life still has challenges, but he is no longer forced to go it alone. It's a beautiful story of life, love, loss, and the peculiar character that is A. J. Fikry.

Excellent book...it took me a little time to get used to the narrator but I ended up loving this book and not wanting it to end.

I listen to audio books as I knit. I wanted something a bit different and a bit slower. this was both. I enjoyed it and it held my interest but it wasn't great. It was worth "a read" and a nice change of pace.
