Narrated By: Julia Whelan

Duration: 11 hours 30 minutes

'Julia Whelan reads the novel in her low, pleasant voice, moving down a register to capture Richard's infuriating condescension and lightening slightly for the younger Emma. With its perfidious turns, this escapist entertainment is a fine example of the 21st century's more cynical version of the O. Henry ending.' — The Washington Post

From Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen comes the next hit audiobook thriller, an instant New York Times bestseller!

When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions.

Praise for The Wife Between Us:

'Addictive domestic thrillers with twist-filled plots and unreliable narrators are increasingly popular. Add in assumptions that should not be assumed, shape-shifting, surprising characters and a complex chronology, and you have a hint of what you'll find in The Wife Between Us...All will be made clear, or perhaps not, as you listen to Julia Whelan's tautly paced performance.' — BookPage

“A clever thriller with masterful twists.” – Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of The Kept Woman

I wanted to love this book but the plot felt slowed down by too many unnecessary details. The narrator has a beautiful woman’s voice but I could not connect with her voice for the leading male character.

There were so many twists and turns, and the reader's voice sounded so similar for each of the main characters, that it was hard to follow. I think it would have been easier to read the book rather than listen to it.

What a confusing and hard to follow book. At one point, all the different characters meshed into one, I do not recommend this book. What a waste of a free book!

The reader can keep everything in perspective as long as she keeps the title in mind when voices switch. The book was rough in the beginning but took off by the middle. Readers will be thinking about this long after they read the last word.

Awesome book with a great twist!

It was pretty good... The narrator was great and believable. I just got a little tired of the piousness of the Nellie character at times, but I was intrigued! Thank you!

Very confusing. Too many unnecessary twists and turns that didn’t hit the mark. You had no idea what was real and what wasn’t. After awhile you just stopped caring.

This was a good book with plenty of twists and definitely kept me interested. However, the constant jumping timeframes to retell the actual truth behind a particular scene (after the scene has already happened) made it a little confusing as a listener. The first big twist is the best with the rest paler in comparison. Finally, I truly love the narrator and all the different female voices she can do, but I could not get past the male voices. They are just not believable, even though she’s really good at changing it up. Overall, though, worth a listen.

Loved this book! I love the way the first half was written and how you think you know what’s going on and then there’s a twist! This one kept me thinking all the way to the end. The narrators voice was a good one and didn’t irritate me the way some do! Definitely recommend this book!

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the character development of Nellie, and how the story began to unravel without flaw. There were no holes in the story line, with plenty of twists and unexpected turns.

Too many twists for the sake of having twists, but they don't add to the storyline. Overall this was just okay, nothing new at all, it was just narrated in a different way to try to fool the reader/listener. Very typical of the genre.

The Wife Between Us is a psychological drama more than it is a Psychological thriller. At times, it gives off a sense of urgency and mystery, but the mysteries and urgency all seem to be anti-climactic in the end. Some of the plot twists are a little bit more predictable than I believe the authors intended, but still well written. It is a great portrait of modern entanglements that make for an interesting story even with out the expected suspense. The characters are well drawn and the culture around the story seems rich and realistic. Overall, I enjoyed the story. I really loved the narration. Julia Whelen is able to tell a story without intruding upon it and her voice is pleasant -- I will actually choose my audio books at times by who is reading it, and I would read any book read by Ms Whelen.

The story kept me intrigued. The beginning it gave the impression that it was the stories of two different people. Once it came together, it kept my attention. The narrator made me giggle despite the story reaching a dramatic climax. This was the case once my husband pointed out that the narrator sounded like Candace Bergen when speaking for the men in the story. So...if you were wondering what Murphy Brown was up to...

As an avid reader I feel like I am rarely surprised anymore and this novel surprised the hell out of me! What an enjoyable suspenseful thought provoking read. I had to get to the end! I do listen to this as an audible book and the narrator was fantastic!

I really liked this book, I kind of found the opposite of some reviewers as I found the beginning to be slower, but by the time the first twist in the first third of the book happened, I was very intrigued and then listened to the rest quite quickly after that. Near the end I couldn’t stop listening. It was slow at times, but overall I really enjoyed it and have recommended it to my mom.

  • Christina Henderson

I really enjoyed the read! It was was written exceptionally well.

This book is about as original as a Lifetime movie, but no where near guilty pleasure. Frankly, I was bored. The characters become so unlikeable and make such obvious, irritating choices that I found myself feeling obligated to just get through it. I don't understand the hype.

  • Anonymous

I enjoyed. The story line was unique, characters well-developed, plot kept my interest. I recommend.

  • Ladywolf

I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to listening to others by the authors.

    Really good... total nail bitter!

  • Dahlia F.

I enjoyed this book - and a well done thriller is always fun - and this one did keep me mostly engaged, the writing well done, but I didn’t feel satisfied until the brilliant ending twist. Make it to the epilogue and it will feel like a worthwhile listen!

  • Suzanne M.

Many twists! Good insight on how people manipulate and become manipulated. I listen twice to make sure that I didn’t miss anything. The ending was quite a surprise also

  • Debbie J.

Book was incredible - so many twists and turns. Have never enjoyed my commute as much as I did when listening to this book.

  • Joanna R.

A lifetime movie in an audio book. I enjoyed the story and wanted to know more. The reader did her best at creating a voice for each character but the different voices ended up sounding cheesy.

  • Tamara M.

Cleverly written. Constantly keeps you guessing.

  • MaryFrances C.

Excellent audiobook but pay attention. There were times I had to go back and replay. The narrator is excellent.

  • Roberta M.

This is a awesome book I listen to it most of the time and our book was reading it plus listening to it as well I would so highly recommend this book

  • Amanda B.

A delightful complexity of plot. I enjoyed the story with all the twists. The narrator has a smooth voice ; very easy to listen to with good cadence.

  • Sofia B.

the book was interesting. certainly didn't go the way I expected. the narrator was good at differentiating each character.

  • J R.

Very slow start, about ready to give up when the action started. It took a long time to realize that there were 2 'voices' narrating this story, just had to figure it out from context. Once we got that determined, and the action got going it was a good book. Maybe it could have been a great read, not sure.

  • Shawna V.

This book kept me interested wanting to know what happened next. However, there was an air of familiarity about it and it was somewhat predictable towards the middle and end. The plot twist at the end shook me but not entirely.

  • Don H.

It was very hard to follow, and slow to develop, All the female characters sounded alike, and made it hard to know who the story was following, and jumping back and forth in time didn't help.

  • Colleen B.

Amazing listen, beginning to end. Great narration. I'm hooked on audio. Story was an intense psychological thriller. With it being through listening as opposed to reading, it some how felt real. Equally I could relate very much to parts of the story. Think a lot of us have played some of these roles ourselves. Well done to the editor and author.

  • Robyn T.

I thought it was a great book. Lots of good twists.

  • Sam B.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SUSPENSE NOVEL, THIS AINT IT! I downloaded this book because it was suggested based on my previous suspense novel interest. This is a fine book about a woman going through some tough stuff (no spoilers), but NO SUSPENSE. There is a small “climax” that happens about 1/3 of the way in and it’s alllll downhill from there. Can’t say I enjoyed it. Maybe if I had gone in expecting no suspense I would’ve enjoyed it more, but there’s so many women centered suspense novels out there, if that’s your thing, skip this one.

  • Katrina G.

My sister referred this book to me and I’m so glad she did! There were twists and turns in this book that I never saw coming. Great read and the narrator did an amazing job! Her voice for Robert was funny to me though.

This book kept me interested. I couldn’t wait to get back to my car to start listening again. This is one I could listen to more than once.

  • Kim C.

    loved the story....

  • Pamela S.

Great book! Fast page turner. The book you refer to friends.

  • Yanick M.

Great book. A middle chapter does get a bit confusing. I bought this book for my long commute and found myself listening to it at home. I couldn’t wait to get to the end.

  • Maureen G.

Moe G Kept me on the eleptical every day .... Very good listen ....

  • Kristina K.

Enjoyed the book very much! Many unexpected twists which kept it interesting. The narrator did a great job of creating different voices for the many main characters.

  • Sara L.

A quick read. It was boring at times with details but otherwise good.

  • Anonymous

Boring and predictable. I had to force myself to finish it.

  • Unknown U.

    Great read!

  • Anne W.

The first half of the book was great, I was completely hooked to each chapter. The second half was a huge let down. I kept waiting on a big reveal or unpredictable twist that never came.

  • Melissa C.

I expected more from this book after reading the reviews. It was not nearly as good as The Girl on the Train as some have compared it to. I kept waiting for something more explosive to happen. Lots of twists and turns, which I did like, but at one point I did get confused about who was best friends with Sam. I had to go back and re-read a few times.

  • Alonzo K.

I have to listen to this book again. Great book, I just need another listen to answer a couple of questions. Can be a little hard to follow but in the end, it all comes together. The narrator was OK.

  • Lacy T.

this book has a really good plot twist kept me super interested finish in two days... super good read

  • Kelly D.

Unbelievably great book. A story that clearly describes the dysfunction that can happen in a marriage. Fast paced and you are running with the characters.

  • Kelly G.

Fantastic listen with multiple twists! I did not like the narrators male voice but he wasn’t really a main character.

  • Jenifer G.

One of the best books I've ever read!! I didn't want it to end!!

  • Hulda I.

I think this was one of the best book I have listening too, with many surprising twists and turns. Well read on my opinion but on times you had to focus on for which character she was reading, but it was few times.

  • Donna K.

I absolutely loved this book. Lots of twists and turns. Couldn’t stop listening. Narrator was fantastic !!! Listen to this you won’t be disappointed !! Brilliant ! Bravo !!

  • Jennie G.

There were some twist and turns but felt like the story was really slow for the first half. It did get confusing listening. So I read the book and was able to figure everything out. Overall it was okay!!

  • Sylvie B.

Unexpected twists and turns. I love when you don't see the end coming.

  • Jeannie O.

Loved loved loved this book. I was hesitant reading some of the reviews ... however I couldn't stop listening to the book unfold ... Well done by both of the authors and I truly enjoyed the narrator - this was a treat.

  • Reina H.

This book was great!!! A lot of plot twists and the book never had a dull moment. The narrator was really good. Definately recommend such a good read!

  • Mallory S.

Kept me listening and completely threw me off with the ending. Great read!

  • Terri S.

    Great book. Lots of twists.

  • Ashly S.

    Great read!

  • Nicole C.

The book was decent. That might be a stretch to be honest. The biggest twist for me came in the middle of the book. I literally was like "whoaaaa I did not see that coming". And I was excited to dive into the latter half of the book. And it let me down page after page after page. I was expecting a huge climax....something having to do with one of the main characters sister.....and yet....it just never came. Completely let down. It almost felt like the writers were so freaking stoked to be writing this amazing "psychological thriller" and half way through, their families decided to take a winter ski trip so they had to rush to complete the book instead of closing so many windows that were open. If the book could have ended half way through, and it gave you the option to write your own ending it would have been better. There is nothing new and exciting about an abusive spouse. It is a dried up thriller that should have died with the famous Julia Roberts movie Sleeping with the Enemy. The beginning got 5 stars. The end got 0. So I had to balance it out somehow. 3 Stars is generous. Also....what the heck was up with the narrator and the male voices in this book??? She made every dude sound like The Royal Duke or Yorkshire or something. So bizarre. She started the book at such a vigorous pace I had to keep bumping back 30 seconds to wrap my head around things that were being said. By the middle of the book it seems her pace slowed. Which made the narration better, but the book stayed the same. Dull. Loose. Predictable. Here is the thing....I would never tell someone not to read/listen to books because I think that every book should be read. Just pretend the ending you come up with in the middle of the book is what actually happens and then listen to the last half of the book every time you vacuum. Or Mow the yard. Or something like that, to drown out the not great ending, until it is over. Because the ending you come up with in your head is the right one.

  • Amy A.

I liked some of the twists but I was waiting for a big climax with the protagonist that never happened.

  • John C.

Not literature. A slightly better than average beach read. Chick lit.

  • Tishiannae S.

Twists and turns that are trying too hard to be a psychological thriller. The narrator was good except for the male voices. Overall, it was an ok listen.

  • Julie R.

Great first read if your just starting audio books. Kept my attention the entire time and could not stop listening.

  • Melany D.

    Good storyline, great narrator!

  • Pam L.

Talk about twist, turns and surprises. The storyline kept me on my toes and interested to the last line.

  • Anonymous

Loved the book, I sat in the car listening even after arriving at my destination. I guess the equivalent of not being able to put it down?? The narrator’s voice was pleasant but I truly disliked ‘Richard’s’ voice. Not enough to be off put by the narrator but enough to be relieved when she spoke in her own tone again.

  • Lou G.

Great read - love the epilogue. Keeps you intrigued and interested throughout. Definitely worth a listen! Narrator was very good.

  • Dana L.

This is one of the best books I've ever listened to or read. WOW! So many plot twists. I loved it!!!

  • Caitlin A

This book was full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed the narrator. One of the best books I’ve “read” in a long time!

  • Rochelle D

Very fast paced, full of twists and turns, and always kept me on the edge of my seat. One of the best books I have read in quite some time. I also enjoyed the way the narrator made her voice change with each character. It kept it very interesting.

  • Shalu S

I usually don’t review books but this one was awesome! Lots of twists I never saw coming and the narrator did a great job. Definitely worth a listen.

  • Amanda S

I enjoyed all the places this book took me. I like having to pay attention to detail to know what is going on. Captivating right up until the very end.

  • Gloryvee c

One of the best novels in a long time I can’t believe it was written by two different people...

  • Jennifer F

Listened to this book during an 15 hour car ride. The time flew, surprises right up to the end! Great story

  • Joanie G

When I first started this book, I could not for the life of me figure out where it was going, all the little details and nuances were so confusing to me; I didn't know who Emma was, who Nellie was; but as I got more and more into it, I actually really liked it. It was surprising how the twists and turns play out and they played out really well.

  • Charity W

Absolutely loved the twist and turns. The narrator is incredible!

  • Elizabeth B

(Spoiler alert) One of the biggest problems with this novel is the marketing. The very description of the book tells you not to believe what you are reading and therefore the reader is constantly on the look out for the deception. When it is finally revealed, it is not as surprising as it could be because we have been warned that there is a twist coming. Having said that, this particular twist was more original than most and although it is fairly obvious from the start that Richard is controlling it is fun to learn how much Vanessa really was in charge of the dissolution of her marriage.

  • Tonya B

The book was very well written and super intriguing. The narrator did a great do with the female voices but the male voices drove me crazy. Her attempts at a male voice were dismal and took away from the theme.

  • Stephanie J

This was a good read at time I got confused as the authors traveled back and forth in time but once I caught on all was well! The narrator was good too, her voice changes and tone kept me interested

  • Brooke I

    read this book for sure!!

  • Berva Lorraine H

Good listen and great narration. Lots of surprises!

  • Sarah b

This book was truly amazing. Very well written and many surprises. I didn't want to stop reading!!!!

  • Andrea m

in one word...Twisted! It's a good read. Its always interesting how women's minds work. Especially when they are backed into a corner or hurt. This book represented well.

  • Chantal B

No great piece of literature but a highly entertaining listen! Couldn’t stop listening.

  • Anonymous

    Great book!

  • Annie G

    I really liked the book

  • Yvonne D

I loved this book! Perfect narration, spellbinding! The twists and turns hold your attention.

  • Jennifer B

This book was sooooooo good. Omg plot twist so good. Loved this book

  • Kristen L

The story was a little predictable but kept my attention.

  • Kari H

    Great book- couldn't stop listening

  • Carrie S

I thought this book was poorly written, confusing at times and it really dragged on. Too many small details that didn't contribute to the story. She tried too hard with the plot twists. I really didn't bond with the characters but I do think it's a subject this needs to be addressed in today's society.

  • Lori M

This is a great read start to finish !

  • Marika B

Great story, couldn't stop listening. 10/10 for the narrator, made this book even more enjoyable!

  • Val B

Good listen. Great twists and turns!
