Summary
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER * FROM THE AUTHOR OF IN A DARK, DARK WOOD

Featured in TheSkimm * An Entertainment Weekly “Summer Must List” Pick * A New York Post “Summer Must-Read” Pick

A gripping psychological thriller set at sea from an essential mystery writer in the tradition of Agatha Christie.

In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…

With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10—one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.

A must read if you enjoy a good mystery. I couldn't put it down and I loved the ending. Several of the other reviewers mention that the book starts off slow. I disagree. I think the beginning pace was perfect to develop the characters.

The main character is really unlikeable. The story itself was engaging - I just didn’t want her to survive it. :-/ The narrator is genius as always. It’s how I found this book.

I prefer a more likeable main character, but it was still suspenseful.

I enjoyed the book, the story was quite interesting and I looked forward to it. The main character was annoying however; always self deprecating and making obvious mistakes that could compromise her safety.

The book was engaging from the beginning and kept one involved listening till the end. The fact that the main character had so many flaws but was still strong was inspiring.

I realized the novel was going to be drivel but hoped it would be fun and the plot would keep me going. Barely. The fact that characters are dying and you want to find out who was doing it, along with a few twists and red herrings, will keep you going (if you're, say, stuck in a car for hours with nothing else to read). The main character is an unlikable victim-y girl, always complaining and constantly on the verge of passing out. The author writes 10-15 (20?) times; "the walls felt like they were closing in on me.." or "my heart was pounding so hard..." (Is that what these kind of novels do?? I didn't know that.) Situations are repeated or re-explained a groan-worthy amount of times, not building tension, but apparently making the book long enough to be published. I don't know Ruth Ware's work, this is probably what she's known for. If you know this author and like her work I guess this one will be fine for you. The only thing "Agatha Christie" about the novel is that you are stuck in one location for pretty much the entire story.

Great read aside from my mild dislike for Lo who tended to annoy me, making it really difficult to connect with her character. However, the story and the plot had me guessing up until the end. The narrator is by far one of my favorites ever since The Death of Mrs. Westaway. Her voice and her ability to make each character sound different is fantastic. Recommended read indeed!

I agree with other readers, I didn’t like the main character until her empathy toward the end of the book, before that she seemed to whine a bit too much and not able too cope too well, but you do learn a bit about that later in the book. Good suspense, that was enjoyed.

Not a very likeable main character, rather than feeling empathy I was exasperated with her. Excellent narrator.

I really enjoyed the book once I got into it. I usually do not like English narration, but this person did really good job and I was amazed at the range of her accents for the different characters. The plot was sometimes expected but there were a few surprises here and there. Enjoyed it more than I thought I woiuld when I started.....

Good book. I was frustrated by Lo's stupidity at times. In the end it paid off.

Good story. I found it a little predictable but still kept me engaged.

It is difficult for me to rate this book because the narration is so awful I never reached a point where I could enjoy or be taken in by the story. The accents made me giggle and the attempts at masculine characters sounded muffled and again quite comical. It is a suspense filled story that I believe is quite good, but save your audio credit and read this one for yourself.

narrator is 10/10! absolutely wonderful read. I'm fresh from reading this, but I'm mixed on the ending. but overall great book. the description of the feelings the main character was feeling was so good ,I felt myself experiencing them as well. this book confirms why I will never do a cruise of any kind.

Narrator was great. Only voice that didn't work for me was "Judah." Plot was a bit repetitive, I was thinking "you wrote this or said this already like twice." The main character, as others have said, was a bit stupid and a bit annoying. However, she was human and had redemptive qualities. Overall, engaging for an audiobook, at some points I was doing something else while listening because I didn't need to pay attention that closely.

The narrator did a fine job reading. I only disliked her “Judah” voice. This was so well written. I was engaged the entire way through. I especially enjoyed the clever twist at the very end. Well done Ms. Ware. Looking forward to reading more of her work.

Kevin A. I agree, the first chapters of the book dragged on way too long, but as the story developed it had all the Agatha Christie suspense. The details of the characters and the Norway scenery were great...Make sure you listen to the last five minutes of the book. Great Summer Read!

I read about 25% of this book and I cannot read it anymore. I am really surprised because I thought I would really enjoy it. First of all, the beginning is very boring. I could not focus on this at all. I didn't care for the characters especially Lo. It begins with a break in to her apartment and her being scared to death. Now, that is a great way to start the story and grab readers but it just didn't work for me. Lo is an alcoholic... leading me to believe that she is an unreliable narrator. I feel that because of this, the story line is going to be very predictable. However, I don't care enough to confirm my predictions by reading spoilers or skipping ahead.

Easy read. I enjoy the narrator. She really helps make the book enjoyable. I felt the same way for ‘in a dark dark wood’. This book isn’t full of twists and turns but it does come together nicely at the end with a twist. I’d recommend it for sort of a mindless read.

I read this because it was the selection this month for my book club. Did not like it! Couldn't stand the protagonist and I thought the storyline was trite and tired. Would not recommend.

The Woman in Cabin 10 is a book that I added to my list because of ratings and hype. The book was okay and I thought the narration was fine. I like crime and suspense books and this one didn't really do it for me. Some of it was kind of predictable and the storyline wasn't really my taste.

Profile Avatar
Karjana H

Ok book, a little to predictable story line for my taste.

Profile Avatar

Weak storyline. Main character is predictably dumb. Don't waste your time.

This book is now one of my favorites! If you liked "The Girl on the Train" you will love "The Women in Cabin 10". It is a suspenful thriller that will keep you guessing and thinking till the end.

Narration was helped the book. The plot was an easy read.

This is THE WORST narrating I've ever heard. The voices of the different characters are weak, abysmal. The book is awful. It drags and drags with the mundane. The metaphors are just sad, the relationships entirely without emotion or connection. Sounds like a series of pronouncements instead of a story being told. I wish I could get my money and time back.

Profile Avatar

Engaging mystery with an excellent plot twist. I also did not feel that it started slow although the pace definately picked up throughout. I gave the narrator 4 stars because she was great except one character was supposed to be from New York City and her American and/or NYC accent was annoyingly terrible. Fortunately he was intermittent. Worth a listen!

I didn't think I'd like this book as much as I did! I'm not much of a thriller genre reader but my book club chose this book. It was pretty slow up until the middle and the last 3-4 chapters pulled me in. I was on edge and thought things were going to complete opposite in which they actually did. I'm glad I gave it a chance.

At first I thought this was going to be quite boring book, it did start off a bit slow but it got better as the book went on. I finish this in few days because I could not put it down. It has very good writing and the narrator was captivating. This ending was amazing it was so good. This would be a must read for a road trip.

Took me a while to warm to the narrator but overall she was very good. The story while good was a little drawn out but enjoyable

I liked the story line, but thought the narration wasn't that great. It was also a bit redundant.

This was a great book. The story line is incredible. It drags out a bit in the middle but hang in there and it will all be worth it. It will keep you guessing until the end.

Profile Avatar

For me this book was entertaining enough to keep going to the end, I don't think it's worthy of all the hype; but, it's not bad either. I suppose I feel for a heroine supposedly smart enough to solve this mystery, the character makes some really dumb choices.

Profile Avatar
Robyn T

The book was overall good but, the beginning was slow after the first chapter and it took me awhile to get into it.

Profile Avatar

A few nice twists & turns, and did get more intense with time. Good for going down the road.

It was pretty good, however a little slow moving in some sections. I didn't love the narration.

Profile Avatar
Marcela Guajardo

The narrator was good. The book was alright, it has good drama; it kept me hooked. I think the main character was sometimes really frustrating, the way she overthinks and analyze everything.

Profile Avatar
Jill Castellano

The narration is fantastic and is key for any audio book! The story is a bit slow and frustrating in beginning, but once it got going, I couldn't stop listening. This is a promising author as I thoroughly enjoyed her first book- ' In a Dark, Dark Wood'.

Profile Avatar
Caron Warnsby

The "heroine "was EXTREMELY whiny and made listening to the story very difficult. There was a twist but I felt completely tortured by the self doubt. She makes Bridget Jones seem like Gloria Steinem. I hate not finishing a book but came close to giving up.

Profile Avatar
Jennifer Eybl

Narrator was great. The book was meh. The main character was so whiny! It was very distracting to me, and I found it hard to enjoy the story.

Profile Avatar
Vanessa Carley

I was really hoping for this to be a suspenseful listen, given the description itself says "twisting mystery", "surprising twists and spine-tingling turns", but I felt it dragged on a lot. The first 3 hours nothing really interesting is happening and I didn't feel a build of suspense either. Once we finally get to the issue, it was interesting but I still didn't feel pulled into it or really cared as much as I hoped I would. I felt that a lot of it could have been cut down. I love mystery and suspense but this just didn't feed that craving I was looking for. Perhaps it would do better as a movie, if it were made into one.
