Summary
Legendary CBS news journalist’s iconic radio broadcasts from Europe during WWII

This collection of William L. Shirer’s radio broadcasts tells the vivid story of WWII and brings the suspense of the times to life for today’s audience.

As the first journalist hired by CBS to cover the war in Europe, Shirer compiled two and a half years’ worth of wartime broadcasts including Hitler’s invasion of Austria, the armistice between France and Nazi forces in June of 1940, daily roundups of news from Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London and Rome, documenting the conditions of these countries under invasion.

Listeners in the United States and worldwide listened with growing horror as Shirer brought a sense of gripping urgency to the events happening in Europe as Germany took those menacing steps towards WWII.

Shirer was also the author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

That was a great listen. Getting the reports of developments in Nazi Germany in real time. A most enjoyable experience

An amazing time machine back to the beginnings of the Nazi attempt to conquer the world and wipe out the Jewish people. Shirer reorts from the belly of the beast. He is anle, vdespite the censorship, to communicate the increasingly dire siruarion as nations fall to to the German juggernaut and makes frequent mention of the Nazi antisemitism which characterized and in so many ways motivated their drive to world domination. It is intriguing to imagine what effect these daily reports had on the American public when the U.S. was being "neutral". The narrator is excellent at conveying some of the subtle sarcasm in his words, especially as thefighting accelerated.

I’m not really interested in history or World War II, but I really enjoyed these insights into life in Berlin in the late 1930s into 1940. Rationing, enduring hardship for the country, the war will be over by winter surely, the German aircraft always destroy 4-8x as many British planes, the Brits dropping bombs over Germany but never seeming to do any damage, etc. Fascinating book to listen to

Very, very interesting to see WW2 from the German perspective. Would have loved hearing more. The clear factual narration was excellent.

Interesting but hard to listen to. Very bland narrator
