Summary
Change is coming to Faha, a small Irish parish unaltered in a thousand years.

For one thing, the rain is stopping. Nobody remembers when it started; rain on the western seaboard is a condition of living. But now - just as Father Coffey proclaims the coming of the electricity - the rain clouds are lifting. Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is idling in the unexpected sunshine when Christy makes his first entrance into Faha, bringing secrets he needs to atone for. Though he can't explain it, Noel knows right then: something has changed.

As the people of Faha anticipate the endlessly procrastinated advent of the electricity, and Noel navigates his own coming-of-age and his fallings in and out of love, Christy's past gradually comes to light, casting a new glow on a small world.

Harking back to a simpler time, This Is Happiness is a tender portrait of a community - its idiosyncrasies and traditions, its paradoxes and kindnesses, its failures and triumphs - and a coming-of-age tale like no other. Luminous and lyrical, yet anchored by roots running deep into the earthy and everyday, it is about the power of stories: their invisible currents that run through all we do, writing and rewriting us, and the transforming light that they throw onto our world.

Utterly charming use of the English language. The more words Williams crammed into a sentence the better it became. One of the best artistic uses of a run on sentence I ever read/heard. Remarkable description of Irishness. I was transported back to Galway wandering the peat bogs.

This book will be in my Top Ten listens for a long time. It is written so beautifully. The narrator is sublime. I found myself replaying whole chapters just to hear it again. And I will listen again. Niall Williams’ command of the English language and ability to illustrate detail may be the best I’ve ever read. If you love excellent writing, this is your book.

I really wanted to love this, because the other reviews made it sound amazing. But, it wasn’t the book for me. It felt a little too jumbled and in cohesive. Story telling from a grand parent- excessive/irrelevant detail, long winded, but touching. Sentence to sentence, it was beautifully written. But all together, it felt a mess.

Wonderful book. Another time, another place where people people found their joy in community and family, not money and possessions. The book had me laugh and cry. Just wonderful.

The story was rather charming, but the minutia of life in a small town on an island in Ireland was just mindnumbing

T this book actually sent me to Ireland because the people described in this book were just like me-just a little crazy and living deeply in the spirit world

A lovely, slow-paced book; beautifully & believably narrated by Dermot Crowley. It lagged a little at times -- perhaps a cold-weather listen. Over all I enjoyed
