In the parish of Balweary, the young Reverend Murdoch Soulis arrives straight from college, full of book learning and high purpose. What he finds is a manse the locals avoid and a housekeeper they speak of only in whispers: Janet M'Clour, a woman with a reputation for witchcraft and a crooked way about her. Written in 1881, Robert Louis Stevenson used broad Scots for the majority of Thrawn Janet. It is short, sharp, and properly chilling, the kind of story that lingers in a quiet room long after the last word is spoken. Some stories are meant for the page; this one was intended to be heard. Stevenson’s Scots can be a struggle on the eye, but spoken aloud in a native voice, the language clicks into place. The dread lives in the cadence, the dry humour, and the deliberate pauses. Hear Thrawn Janet as intended, narrated by a Scotsman. To help you get the most out of the listening experience, this audiobook includes a short bonus chapter at the end, breaking down the older Scots terms and expressions so no detail is lost. Best heard on a dark night, with the wind getting up outside.
