Unabridged Audiobook
This is a solid Women’s Historical Fiction story set in the 1600s. It is not a great time to be a woman especially an impoverished one. England is in midst of a Civil War, witchcraft accusations and superstition abound, a hardscrabble domestic life of poverty. These characters feel more real than many “based on true story” ones. They are brought to life. Alinor is heroic in spite of life’s struggles and pain. Excellent Narration-I highly recommend this book. If you’re looking for fairytale court life and intrigue this book isn’t it. You will be transported to life for women in the 1600’s—as rugged a life as it is—I thought it was beautifully written.
Another amazing story and intricate web of history and details from Philippa Gregory!
This book was so depressing! I generally love Gregory's work but this one was terrible. The characters weren't loveable. Pretty much all of them were annoying except for the little boy. The only good thing about the book was the detail on the time period and the narrator.
Another very satisfying story from P. Gregory. I enjoyed this book very much and finished and less than a week. The story and its portrayal of daily life and struggles that women faced back in the 17th century is very vivid in the details... great read!
Thought it very trite. Not a Gregory book at all.
The story seems well researched but the storyline is slow. I kept waiting for something to happen and when it does it’s slow and anti-climatic. I was very disappointed as I have always enjoyed this authors books in the past. The narration is very good.
