Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time, returns in a courtroom drama that The New York Times says is 'riveting' and 'suspenseful.'

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many readers know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and—most of all—heart.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.

There is a time to kill and a time for justice. Now comes A Time for Mercy.

Don’t miss John Grisham’s new book, THE EXCHANGE: AFTER THE FIRM!

I loved this book and can only hope a movie will be made with the same characters as with A Time To Kill. I also hope there will be many more books to come from Mr. John Grisham. I love Michael Beck as Narrator, as well.

This book is 15 hrs long and they don’t get into court until the last 4.5 hours. And you get left hanging with no real ending.

Grisham is one of my favorite authors and Jake Brigance, one of my favorite characters. The narrator is spot on with creating these characters! I can’t wait to read more.

A story only John Grisham could tell tell. The reader was great but I would like to remind him there is no such word as ‘vetrin’! Respectfully, the word is veteran! (better-an). SL, Longview, TX

While I’m a Grisham fan, and love his stories, especially the familiar characters in this book, the subject of the main trial is extremely sad and pathetic. The crime is horrific, the defendant and his family have had the worst life, and new details only add to their pathetic background. I found it very difficult to finish the entire book because of how sad and depressed it made me feel. However, that being said, the narrator is the BEST I’ve ever heard. He truly is amazing and enjoyed his voicing, acting and overall narration.

Where do I start? As a Grisham fan for years, this was far from his best work. Jake is back. The Ford County series is by far my favorite. The characters (Harry Rex is a hoot!) can be easily followed and loved. However, this particular book was awful. Jake was made out to be incompetent in some aspects. He’s not. The ending was terrible. I was not a happy camper at the very abrupt end. What happened?? Too many loose ends. And lastly, this book could have been cut down by about 6 hours. I couldn’t care less what they had for breakfast or how crispy the bacon was. Just say they ate breakfast and move along. But the narrator, Michael Beck was outstanding, as usual.

John Grisham has a way of literally pulling you into his stories. I always feel like I'm a part of his books and it brings back the culture and beauty as well as the seedy sides of Mississippi. Michael Beck did an exceptional job narrating. He should narrate all of the books with Jake Brigance in them! I love hearing all of the characters come to life through his narration! Great book!!

I really enjoy John’s character Jake Bragance and all the co text he adds in these books that feature him and Clanton, MS. Fabulous.

Terrific narration. Loved his Southern accents. The nuanced character accents enhanced the connection to each character. The story, as always with John Grisham, held me in rapt attention. Sorry the story ended where it did. Maybe a “Part Two”?

I can’t wait for it to be a movie! I hope Matthew McConaughhey reprises his role as Jake. It was a great follow up to “A Time To Kill” (which was more gripping). However, this book brought the main character back to life in a way we could relate to much more. Jake was upfront and personal. Grisham may have taken a few liberties with court procedures for the flow of the story. Loved it and recommended it to friends and family.

The story is good but moves slowly. Easy to skim over that if actually reading but listening to all of it got tiring and old.

Time For Mercy was an awful book. Not only was it full of fillers to get to the main issue - trial of the kid for murder it was legally inaccurate. The fact the sister was raped and pregnant would have been excluded by pretrial motion as irrelevant and inflammatory have a no basis of the state of mind of the kid. The killers reputation only comes in to play if it has some affect on the kid. No judge in his right mind would ever speak to a foreman of a jury ex parte nor declare a mistrial in less than 24 hours. Some judges will the jury still liberate for a week!

I found the narrator’s female voices very distracting- also his speech cadence was less story telling and felt more like reading the news.

The narration was brilliant, the plot was fail-safe. The character build up was typical Grisham. However, in 1981 I had a similar case, where a 14 year old boy shot and killed his father, because he beat his mother. The state attorney didn't even lose a breath when he said no charges self defense. Still good book, good characters.

Fun listen, great characters and the narrator, for the most part is very good. His children's and woman's voices are a little strange, but you get used to it. Perhaps a little preachy from Grisham about his world view, but it's a good world view so I didn't mind.

Michael Beck's reading made this story come alive. He's a great interpreter of the characters. Grisham's story is a quintessential Grisham story. I never tire of his books. Thanks to author, reader, and publisher.

Loved the story! John Grisham is a true master with words. This story was amazing from the beginning to the end. I love the characters and how they always feel like family. I even learned some lawyer banter! I also want to say; Not sure how I would like any other narrator. Beck is definitely up there with the best of all narrators.

Nice to have a sort of sequel to a previous JG book; it’s like revisiting an old friend. And the end game as unpredictable as ever for Jake Briggance. Looking forward to the next one!
