Summary:

Voted America's Best-Loved Novel in PBS's The Great American Read

Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep South—and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred

One of the most cherished stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.

This classic describes coming of age in the Deep South amidst serious life events, the awareness raised by being the children of Atticus, a local attorney. Both children became aware of the damage done by severe racial prejudice and joined their father in the courageous but tragic counter cultural activities, raising awareness of the pain and suffering of African Americans, and the bravery required to be a minority in the Deep South. Loved this book and have listened several times.

This book will be with me for the rest of my life. Everyone should read this.

  • Victoria G.

I love the language and descriptions in this book. It really makes you think about the time period. The message was deep and too true. I found myself contemplating the human heart long after finishing this book. The narrator was great. She spoke so smoothly that it was easy to get lost in the story.

    Excellent book.

  • Jacklyn V.

Very interesting view of a slice of Americana in the late 1920’s and early 30’s from a s child’s point of view ! Also some good life lessons learned . Narrator was excellent !!

Sissy Spacek was the perfect fit for this reading. I felt like Scout was by my side the whole time.

This book is so beautifully written. The narrator does an amazing job reading the book aloud.

  • Sally B.

Loved the book and Sissy Spacek was amazing with the different voices of the people. Harper Lee was so explicit, couldn’t put the book down!!

Although I read this in high school, I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the story. Listening to it read by Ms. Spacek completely transported me to that time and place.

  • Anonymous

This was such a great read.

  • Denise R.

No better narrator for this book other than Sissy Spacek could have been chosen. Do they give awards for best narration of an audio book?

  • Tracey Z.

For me, it was just OK.

  • Scott G.

A timeless classic which still resonates today.

  • Mudassar B.

    Sweet, pure and beautiful...

  • Abigail D.

One of my favorite books. If you were assigned this book in school and dreaded it, I implore you to try reading it again, if not listen to this recording. It reminds me why Atticus Finch is one of literature's most beloved characters. I honestly fell in love all over again. The writing is smart, lush, and vivid. Touching, witty, and heartbreaking. Pair this with Sissy Spacek's wonderful performance, and you've got a masterpiece. Without making goofy cartoon voices, Sissy differentiates all of the characters using simple changes in pitch and delivery. When you're listening, you almost forget it's just one woman speaking. The recording is 12 hours long, but I found it went by extremely fast. Thoroughly enjoyable. I think I may make this a yearly listen so I can enjoy it again.

  • Joe M.

    Outstanding book, outstanding narrator!

  • Bridget Q.

    Sissy Spacek was wonderful.

  • Pamela J.

This is the first audiobook I ever listened to. Sissy Spacek was perfect for narrating this book. I have listened to it many times and will listen to it many more.

  • Richard J.

Amazing !!!!! If you close your eyes it like watching a movie .

  • Kristin V.

Phenomenal. Sissy Spacek gives a genuine and just voice to Scout. I hadn’t read this since I was relatively young. A novel with a strong sense of time and place that somehow manages to be timeless. Brilliant.

Even if you have read the hard copy version, listening to this will be a treat.

  • W Todd

Favorite book of all times have read multiple times and listened to at it least ten times. Sissy Spacek is excellent as Scout, feels like home.

  • Edward C

One of the best books ever written. I had forgotten what a great book it is. Engaging, engrossing, emotive, (I cried three times and I never cry), outstanding use of language. And there can be no better narrator than Sissy Spacek (so?). Great southern accent and use of voices for each character. You will glad you revisited this old friend.

  • Sharon W

Great book. It is a classic for a reason. I listened to it around the same time I read Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry which helped give a deeper picture of the times.

  • Michelle B

It is a really good book and I really recommend it.

  • Jacob S

A classic, with so many great characters and topics for thought and discussion. Spacek did an amazing job reading and bringing Scouts character to life. Loved it!

  • Joanne B

Audiobooks has been the saving grace to help my daughter through school. Being a teacher I won't let her use cliff notes style books. Instead she reads the boom WITH thw audio. it has helped develop her understanding of the story and comprehension.

  • Jean Varner

The theme of the book is as timely today as it was when it was first published. Prejudice will always be with us but there is hope for humanity. May we be encouraged to live our lives with courage and conviction. The narration was excellent.

  • Cari Anderson

A classic must read for a reason! Sissy Spacek is the perfect narrator.

  • tracey golden

great read sad in the end about the young man Tom Robinson very enjoyable to the last word

  • Susan Martin

    Timeless story told beautifully!

  • Lorrie Tanner

I think that this book is amazing! And it's so interesting. And the narrator makes it come alive so much more. Reading without listening to the audio book doesn't make it click. So having this book so well spoken is awesome for me.

  • Elliotte Fajardo

I remember this being required reading back in grade school. Nothing like the exquisite narrative that Sissy Spacek does in her MASTERFUL narration that bring ;Jean Louise Finch (Scout) , Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) , Atticus Finch. Calpurnia., Charles Baker Harris (Dill), Arthur Radley (Boo) , Tom Robinson, and Mayella Ewell to life with this timeless classic. A MUST!

  • Shamecca Gaylord

At first I couldn't get into listening to the book but after a while it started to come together for me and I enjoy it so much that I am going to listen to it again.

  • Jennifer Ferguson

Great for a first listen. I had never read the book while in school and I'm not much into classics. But this is a classic for a reason, great book and narration.

  • Amanda Osier

I'm an 8th grader and we got assigned to read this book. It was so cool that they had a southern accent reading the book because it felt like she knew the story and it really brought you more into the book. This book was amazing and I wasn't expecting it to be this good. This is my new favorite book!

  • Rita Mandoli

I am getting to know southern Mississippi and just spent two months there. The language and issues of the book are still pertinent, the prejudice isn't as overt but is engrained in Southern culture and the attitudes of the white population towards the blacks. It really was dangerous for blacks to cross whites, and it still isn't a fair world for the non-white population. Sissy Spacek is gifted as an interpreter of Scout's world, but the writing is amazing, rich and beautiful, even when the story is ugly, it is real. I will have to read Lee Harper's new release. I didn't find the story slow, but then, the South is slow, and I am not accustomed to the speed of television!

  • Jessica Peterson

Sissy Spacek did an amazing job narrating. Gave me a greater appreciation for the book!

  • Gregg Hamilton

Not at all what I was expecting. I thought it was a courtroom drama. I think it would have been a rather boring read, but Sissy Spacek really brought it to life.

  • Cardon Slater

Since we m ow this book is amazing, I will just comment on the narrator of the audio. She was good and easy to listen too for hours on end.

  • jamshed ahmed

Kinda boring I mean it gets interesting at the end of the book but the beginning is so bad....

  • Christa Blevins

I love the narrator reading. She does great! I just find the book a little offensive. If you are sensitive to the "N" word then I would not recommend this book. But remember it's setting is when stuff like that was an okay word to say. But it is a good and interesting book.

  • Joan Kosanovich

Spectacular! The story is timeless, and Ms. Spacek's narration adds an outstanding level of excellence to this class work of literature.

  • Kaitlin Greenaway

I read this book years ago when I was in school. It was a great way to re-read the book, as I wanted to read the new book - Go set a Watchman.

  • Ashley Druckenbroad

This book is life changing. It made me laugh and and cry and warmed my heart. Sissy Spacek brought the character of Scout to life in a way no one else could. Bravo!

  • Gwendolyn Gaither

I had never read this in my younger years, but I had seen the movie. Loved it! I think Sissy Spacek brought Scout and the story to life as I listened. Excellent book and narrator!

  • Lupe Castillo

I suppose this book appealed to the masses in 1960, the controversial subject matter. However I found the ignorance and naiveness of some of the characters amusing. I still had a very difficult time getting through the book I found it to be boring and slow for today's reading. Sissy Spacek did a great job bringing out that simple southern charm.

  • Evelyn Reilly

    No words for this book...........................................................................

  • Shirley Sott

    Best boooooooooooooooooooooook everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ed G

As with most, I read this book in school and have seen the movie several times. But Ms Spacek really brings it to life. Her southern accent draws you into the characters, using just the right amount of emotion. I've recommended this version to everyone ... it is a must listen!

  • Dewey Stevens

There has been so much written about this book that anything I could add would be redundant. I'll just say that: a) I can't believe it took me this long to finally read it, and b) I am glad that I finally did.

  • lorin

After reading pillar of the earth(world worst book) I needed to go back to fundamentals to remember there are still good writers out there in this world. To Kill a Mockingbird helps me remember how there are writers that make every word count, that they do not search for sheer volume. Harper Lee's work is a masterpiece, a heartbreaking masterpiece. My only regret is she never wrote another book. It remains the best book I ever read.

  • abrewer

Such a sweet pleasure to read and listen to!! I wish there was a library full of wonderfully written books like this.

  • andy

Such a wonderful book, but read by Sissy Spacek, it is even better. Her southern accent literally becomes Scout's voice in a way that is just perfect.

  • Nancy

Enjoyed it every bit as much as the first time I read it years ago. It is a must listen for anyone who enjoys the classics. I didn't want it to end.

  • Riverside

I hadn't read the book since high school. As a result I didn't actually remember the story that well. What a treat to rediscover such a fantastic and timeless piece of literature!

  • Anonymous

Wonderful ,timeless book........... and beautifully narrated.

  • nittany1979

I read this book once in high school, but I must have been lacking the interest to remember it, because listening to it was like the first time I had ever heard it. Sissy Spacek was fantastic, I wish ALL books were performed by trained actors, she was really excellent. This book was an amazing journey through the law of the south, as well as the Finch family. I now see why this book is cherished so much. Great audio book, rent it!

  • Anonymous

I love, love, love this book. Its the best book ever.

  • Anonymous

This was a very good book. It kept you interested through out the whole book.

  • MichelleNishi

In my opinion this is the greatest book ever written. Somehow Harper Lee has figured out how to bottle innocence and sell it. My only regret is that she never wrote another.

  • wlh2040

This was a wonderful story. I read it in high school, but appreciate it much more now. I'd encourage any adult to read it, but admittedly it would be a bit easier to understand some things for those of us who grew up in The South.

  • 1tracymidwife

What a wonderful book! Sissy Spacek is the perfect reader. She brings Scout to life. My favorite book of all time!

  • Anonymous

Likely to be my favorite book of all time. Will now go and buy the movie. Sissy is the perfect person to read this book too. You can feel that she is Scout.

  • Anonymous

for some reason I never got to this in HS. This was a great story and it's every bit the classic. Highly recommend

  • Anonymous

Can't believe I had never read before. Absolutely wonderful.

  • Deanna

This book kept me interested from start to finish. Sissy Spacek was an terrific narrator and made the characters come to life. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic for a reason.

  • Texas History Fan

What a classic. I am a big reader and I cannot believe it has taken me this long to enjoy this great book. I am constantly recalling other books, movies, and TV shows that reference this book through its characters or circumstances. Now I get it. Sissy Spacek is perfect as the reader. Her East Texas twang brings Scout to life as no other person could.

  • Jean

According to my records I read this book in 1961 and I thought it was great. When I saw the book on SAB I almost by passed it but realized I did not remember much about the book. I am happy I chose to listen to it as Sissy Spacek did a suberp job in reading this story. It almost seemed like a new story to me as I had forgotten most of it and I think that society has changed a lot since the day this book was written. My perspective of the story was a lot different than in 1961. Listening to this book makes me want to go back and reread some more classics. If you chose this book you will not be disappointed.

  • Kathy

I'm not going to add much that the other reviewers haven't already said. I read this book many years ago, and have seen the movie more times than I can remember. This audio version was wonderful. Sissy Spacek is the perfect narrator with her soft Southern accent, and I could always tell which character was speaking just by her intonations. I did have to remind myself that the story is set in the 1930's as some of the language is uncomfortable by today's standards. But the story is powerful, and it is impossible to not be affected by it.

  • Stephen Sink

I've loved the movie since the first time I saw it many years ago. I think I love the book even more, without losing any respect for the movie, which is quite true to the book. There are many passages in the book that are not even touched upon in the movie. Sissy Spacek is PERFECT for this novel.

  • Cindy

This might be my most favorite of all times. Sissy Spacek was a great narrator. I was sad when this book was over.

  • Sharla

This novel is such a vital piece of American literature, and Sissy Spacek's narration definitely did it justice.

  • E. Weisz

The book is still a classic after all these years. A wonderful story for both children and adults.

  • Peggy Stortz

Even though I had read Harper Lee's classic years ago, I was captivated by her tremendous skill as an author and by Spacek's delilghtful narration. To Kill a Mockingbird is the epitome of a perfect novel: one which successfully captures each moment on paper, has believable characters and a fascinating plot. Now that I have finished it, I don't have to carry my CD player from room to room anymore.

  • Anonymous

excellent. one of my favorite books and this recording did not let me down.

  • Rachel Secore

This audio book is a perfect work of art. Sissy Spacek is amazing. This might be the best audio book I have ever listened too. I am glad it won the audie!

  • Elphie

This is definitely a classic; one of the best books of all time. When I read this book in high school, I enjoyed it but I am sure didn't appreciate all of the deeper undertones. Atticus Finch was surely a living saint and someone I would want as a close friend or relative. I could listen and read it again! Absolutely endearing to the heart!

  • Heather Holleque

I loved this book so much I had to do my first review after using Audiobooks for a long time. This was just excellent and Sissy Spacek was perfect as the reader. I was sad that it ended.

  • Anonymous

Excellent book I learned that this book is a High School level, but I was very happy to read and see how the "Law is always the same" You can love anybody; regardless whto they are. Everybody should read this book.

  • Anonymous

Absolutely beautiful story from the viewpoint of a little girl that describes the decency of a man and his family.

  • Elizabeth Manuge

this book is a classic and well deserves to be. it covers quite a few important issues without the reader being particularly aware of this. it is an excellent book for school english classes. as well the story is told by a young girl with whom it is easy to identify. It is beautifully read by a person with an appropriate southern accent. All of the strong emotions felt by the characters arecleverly underplayed, an amazing story to be analyzed and studied. i give it 5 stars. I loved listening to this audiotape.

  • Wayne

Almost a perfect work of art. Sissy Spacek offers her own beautiful southern accent. Amazing!

  • PK

I never read the book during my school years and am extremely glad I took this opportunity to understand why it is considered a classic. Sissy Spacek did a most enthralling job of portraying the storyline with such passion that I felt I knew each of the cast intimately. I enjoyed it immensely!

  • Pam Kennedy

... everyone is nuts about this novel. I never had the opportunity to read this masterpiece, so I decided to listen to it. Sissy Spacek's performance is dead-on beautiful, her voice giving life to Scout's own & adding a gorgeous Southern rhythm to the story-telling. Sometimes, I couldn't get out my car when I arrived at my destination, because I didn't want to stop listening. Interestingly, I didn't see the story as described above: about a lawyer defending a black man. Instead, I saw it as a compelling coming-of-age story, with issues of racism, bigotry & class differences seen through a child's eyes. It is a book to never be forgotten, and to be re-read (either with eyes or ears) more than once in a lifetime.

  • Anthony Smith

A fantastic reading of one of the very best American novels. Sissy Spacek gives a phenomenal performance. Her pacing and Southern renditions are perfect. Harper Lee's wonderfully powerful and poetic story read so well makes for one of my favorites audio-books. It doesn't get much better...

  • Ruth

I thoroughly enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird and have now listened to it at least 5 times on my long commute. I purchased the CD -- it's a keeper -- and the book as well. Sissy Spacek's narration is wonderful. Although I had seen and loved the film as a teenager, I had never read the book. Now, having read the book and listened to Sissy Spacek's reading of it, I feel that the film, great as it was, missed a lot. This book ranks as my #1 all time favorite (and I have read a LOT of books!)

  • Vicki Freeberg

You probably read this book in high school as I had, and saw the movie years ago. I thought I'd listen to it this time and I was reminded over and over again what a terrific book this is. It is read by Sissy Spacek, an added plus.

  • Ronald Defenbaugh

Stumbling through academics in the sciences I missed the fine arts, literature, and the like. In my retirement, I'm trying to catch up. My recent reading of THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN was such a joy. I thought it couldn't be topped. THE KILLING OF A MOCKING BIRD tops it. Sissy Spacek does a wonderful job and the lessons taught may be too difficult for the younger mind. I'm not sure I could have enjoyed it as much when younger. One reviewer indicated they could read it again for the first time. I understand what they meant. The second reading is never as good as the first. I'm glad I waited. It was a joy.

  • Bruce

The book is of course exceptional, and Sissy Spacek's narration was absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed her reading so much that I decided to purchase the audiobook so that I didn't have to wait for the space of time between CD sets arriving in the mail. Highly recommend this audiobook.

  • Dan

I agree with all the other reviews. This listen is just fantastic and Sissy Spacek is a perfect reader. I wish I could go back in time and listen to this for the first time all over again. It really is a GREAT story. I think "Mockingbird" and "Where the Red Fern Grows" are about as good as it gets. Enjoy!!!

  • Anonymous

Absolutely the most wonderful "read" - Sissy Spacek is out of this world PERFECT for this rich story - she truly brought it to life for me! I wish more actors would narrate audiobooks!

  • Anonymous

Sissy Spacek does an absolutely fabulous job reading this book. I couldn't imagine anyone doing a better job!

  • Nann

I haven't read this book since I was a kid. I don't think I appreciated the wonderful southern language, humor, and pace as much as I did with this go around. Sissy Spacek does a wonderful narration. It is such a loss that Harper Lee didn't share her talent with more books. I will definately come back to this book again.

  • Kim

What a wonderful classic. I originally read it in high school then I decided to read again. It is one that will make you make you think. This is always a book worth reading.

  • Catherine Knowles

You must treat yourself to this book. Sissy Spacek's narration was incredible. Her characterizations were subtle, but so stylized I always knew who was "speaking." I was so impressed and engrossed, I bought it for myself after listening to the 1st few discs and now have a waiting list among my friends as a loaner.

  • Kelly Guzman

Sissy Spacek is the perfect person to read this book. She keeps you engaged throughout. I've recommended it to everyone who listens to audiobooks. Listen to it, you won't be disappointed!

  • Angela Polkamp

When I saw how many discs were in the unabridged version I almost went with the abridged version. I am so glad I didnt. I ended up listening to all the discs in 2 days. Sissy Spacek is the perfect reader for this book. She keeps you totally involved in the charachters. This is a classic for a reason, and I suggest noone passes up the chance to listen to this book.
