A compelling narrative that was relatable and stirring. I appreciated the author's honesty and insight into her experiences. Her perspective on America and the Army as someone raised abroad in a high control culture was eye opening.

Daniella, I just finished listening to your incredible book, and I wanted to thank you for having the courage to keep going through everything you endured so that you could share your story with the world. I grew up in a cult as well, and so many parts of your experience resonated deeply with me. Your honesty, resilience, and willingness to tell the truth about what happened touched me more than I can express. Thank you for giving a voice to experiences that so many people struggle to put into words.

This was so good I bought a signed copy.

I literally don't have high enough praise for this book. The writing was incredible, I started listening to it at work where I have my hands busy but my mind is free. I thought, 'this will make my hours at work pass faster' and not only did it do that but then I walked home still listening to it and started doing chores around the house so I could keep listening. Daniella's story is riveting, heartbreaking, and too often relateable. I'm just grateful she survived and chose to tell it. It starts off in the Children of God cult where abuse & horror is routine to the point of mundanity and follows her journey out into the world of the 'systemites' (aka wider society), and then through her career in the military and beyond. Every single part of this book was something my brain wanted to chew on for various reasons. It felt like this story slotted EXACTLY into a spot that had been waiting for it in my mind. The way the author uses her story to explore widespread, systemic misogyny felt particularly salient. The injustices described in the book often hit a little too close to home, but with a few bright points scattered throughout: the (somewhat) ubiquitous solidarity of sisterhood, friendships and allies found in unlikely corners, and Daniella's own tenacity and sense of righteous fury really carried this story through. I think my favorite part of the whole book is near the beginning when Daniella explains the meaning and the context behind her mother's choice for her name.I'm so sad this book is over. I guess I'll be purchasing her next one because I went and read it all too quickly and now I'm going to need more material to listen to when I go back to work!

Daniella did a fantastic job both writing and then narrating her story. I'm ready for her next book!

Why don’t you just leave? So many victims are asked this question and this book answers it so perfectly . my immediate and extended family operate The same way And the author has put into words so many feelings I never could. My brain made a few clicks as the author puts it while reading this book and is helping me find peace in my separation from the family
