Summary
LAPD Detective Renée Ballard tracks a serial rapist whose trail has gone cold, and enlists a new volunteer to the Open-Unsolved Unit: Patrol Officer Maddie Bosch, Harry’s daughter.

Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles.
Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen—a theft she can’t report without giving her enemies in the department ammunition to end her career as a detective. She works the burglary alone, but her mission draws her into unexpected danger. With no choice but to go outside the department for help, she knocks on the door of Harry Bosch.

At the same time, Ballard takes on a new volunteer to the cold case unit: Bosch’s daughter Maddie, now a patrol officer. But Maddie has an ulterior motive for getting access to the city’s library of lost souls—a case that may be the most iconic in the city’s history. Complex, satisfying, and full of dexterous twists, The Waiting demonstrates once more that “you can’t do better than Michael Connelly” (Forbes).

Great book, up till the last! He took the easiest road to ending! Love the Bosch series ! Too bad he didn’t know Trump would be 47, trying to paint J6 protesters as terrorist just makes Connelly look like a nutty liberal!

Profile Avatar Toots Nov 2024

It was slow. But in the writers own way he put down President Trump. That bothered me. I just can’t support that.

Bought every Bosch book written. Love the character, not the author. Putting his political opinion in the book barely hidden, really pissed me off. People are tired of the BS. WILL NOT BUY ANYTHING MORE FROM CONNELLY. Had me and ya lost me. When will you people learn?

Michael Conally created an intriguing storyline with some unexpected twists. He never disappoints! Ballard's dog was only mentioned once, though. And, Connelly might consider leaving out side topics touching on speculative information regarding politics.

I enjoyed the narration. It was a tad slow getting started, but after chapter 5 I couldnt put it down!

We liked the book but the ending was way too abrupt.

Well read. Good plot Held my interest

Profile Avatar Cynthia C. Feb 2025

I am out after listening to the first two hours. Connelly’s political perspective is unworthy of my time. I’ve listened to all the Bosch books and the Lincoln Lawyer. Never again.

Very procedural thus a slow read.

I enjoyed the novel. I enjoyed the narration. I miss more Hieronymus Bosch, but Renée Ballard does not disappoint!

it was good. a little long. I like the character

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2024

This narration was excellent. The voices were the same as the characters in the Bosch tv programs and that made it very enjoyable.

Profile Avatar William Troyk Nov 2024

The book could have had more action but was well done.

Profile Avatar Lhoff Nov 2024

This book was good but I was disappointed that when it said Ballard and Bosch that it wasn’t Harry Bosch it was Maddie.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2024

too much filthy language
