Unabridged Audiobook
Great listen. Thought ptovoking.
It was slow for me.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. Interesting, economical writing. It reminded me of A Handmaid’s Tale in some ways. Really nicely narrated. I would recommend it.
Good story and very good narrator. The midle part of the book is a bit less interesting but nonetheless I really enjoyed the book. Lots of elements are not really explained so some people can be disapointed, even if for me the setting are pretty obvious and do no require more in depth explanation. It's quite evocative and poetic.
Disappointing read from a otherwise great author. I don't mind a good dystopian setting or a slow building story but the story never built and the dystopia offered no new insights I felt like . Maybe I missed some vital reference - I've never read Kafka.
Interesting premise and the narration is good, but ultimately it felt very shallow. It's kept very featureless, with no real backstory beyond what you can infer (and none of that is particularly interesting) and little character development. There are so many moments where the story just stops dead while the narrator pontificates about a particular word. It felt like a short story that had been padded out to novel length. with a lot of naval gazing. It's a quick read, but a frustrating one which isn't as clever or original as it seems to think it is.
Great potential story but I felt lacking some depth and was quite short. The potential dystopian future is very real with our current ‘humanitarian progress’ so it’s refreshing to read the anger and disdain from the forthcoming generation towards us for what we allowed on our watch as the author John puts it. Narration good and some nice areas of tension in the book. Left feeling like I wanted more at the end though... like something was missing.
