Unabridged Audiobook
I finished reading some days ago, and find myself missing the Wangs, so excellent a job the author did with characterization. She peopled the narrative with personalities, who ebb and flow across the whole of it in wonderous and beautiful balance. And talk about your cliffhangers. The book ends with all of these persons poised for the next chapter of their lives, and then ends with tension, and drama, and unanswered questions. Sigh. The narrator was excellent for the most part, though by the end the characters voices were muddled, and indistinguishable, as if she became tired of the whole process. Leo, especially lost the distinctness that was easily discernible at the beginning, as did Andrew. The title left me expecting a much different novel; not one that was so tethered to reality. Anyhow, ten thumbs up over all. I deeply enjoyed reading this story and learning so much about China and the impact historical events had on people’s lives.
