Summary
Medical student Amy Brenner is spending the night on a locked psychiatric ward.

Amy has been dreading her evening working on Ward D, the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. There are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. Reasons nobody can ever find out.

And as the hours tick by, Amy grows increasingly convinced something terrible is happening within these tightly secured walls. When patients and staff start to vanish without a trace, it becomes clear that everyone on the unit is in grave danger.

Amy’s worst nightmare was spending the night on Ward D.

And now she might never escape.

The narrator did good. No issues there. The plot was good and the ending sorta twisty, but the main character wore me out. She’s pretty whiny and that started to really grate on my nerves about 1/3 of the way in. Don’t regret purchasing, but wouldn’t listen to it if you’re a little grouchy.

Profile Avatar Glogirl Jul 2024

The main character,Amy, was immature and down right dumb The repetitiveness of her stupid thoughts will drive anyone reading this insane. And the idea that she wanted to be a doctor made no sense because she certainly didn’t have the brain of piss ant. I just want to forget I ever read this book.

This Author has a creative mind anyone can appreciate. I have a hard time re reading books because my mind can figure things out pretty quick and I have a great memory. But her books. I feel like I have never read a mystery book. It's amazing. As soon as I put my finger on what is going on. The book laughs at me and says here's another twist. I get a little motion sickness there is that many turns. The only time I have ever loved to be in that kinda state. The last chapters always blow my mind. This book did not disappoint. And the narrator was really good. I hate when robots read there's no heart no different emotions. This narrator was good.

Interesting and kept me listening. Psych thriller on psych ward. I wonder the wisdom of books that completely misrepresentation mental health hospitals when (as a society) we are trying to encourage people to seek help (including hospitals) for mental health.

Very repetitive and immature writing at times. If you ever forget how the main character’s ex boyfriend broke up with her, never fear. You’ll be retold about 30 times in the first half of the book. The narrator seems to stress some words incorrectly or at least is unable to show nuanced emotions through her tone. Overall not worth the time.

Well done good read

The worst book I’ve read in years. This felt like it was written for a twelve year old girl. The main character is an insult to women in general but especially women in medicine. She’s whiny, wimpy and dumb. The numerous breaches of patient confidentiality were so absurd. It was slow, painful and boring. The “twists” were predictable. I’m a big fan of McFadden but this book was awful.

Superb stuff. I picked this book at random. And so glad I did. The narrator gave it extra depth.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2024

Really enjoyed this book and a great twist

Profile Avatar Suzanne M. Sep 2024

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! My favorite fiction of the decade! I will read/listen to more if this author!! Please dont miss this!! Funny, thrilling, intriguing, a bit scary( if u ever spend the night on a locked down psyche unit!)

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2024

Awful. As others have said, the central character is, at best, annoying and immature. The dialogue, particularly at the start of track 59 encapsulates how bad it is. The script wouldn’t be out of place in Scooby Doo. Avoid.

Slow and hard to listen to the narrator

Would recommend this book

Profile Avatar Gion F. Apr 2026

In moments throughout the book, the audio didn’t match what was stated in the physical book.

I am a big Freida McFadden fan, and while the story was good, the main character in this book was overly dramatic. The constant over thinking of everything and narration was annoying. She seemed like a high school student. I stuck it out til the end, but the main character, or maybe the narration, had me second thinking it.

All over the place over the top would give this a miss narrator

Profile Avatar Jamie J. Aug 2025

I enjoy this author’s books and don’t regret reading this one but also (seeing other comments on here) found the main character annoying and unpleasant. I would worry immensely about anyone with her lack of boundaries and maturity around psychiatric patients—much harm could be done with her projections and judgmental demeanor. The novel dragged more than Frieda McFaddens other page-turner but again, I still enjoy her books!

Profile Avatar Neckole S. Jul 2025

Enjoyed the book. It was entertaining. I thought i knew the twist but it switched up here and there.

Profile Avatar Bennetti Mar 2025

I found this book to be enjoyable

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2025

If a book isn’t based on facts, then I accept it for what it is…. Entertainment. And it did entertain me! Amy wore me out! But I had fun trying to figure it out the who, what, and why! I had a blast yelling at dumb dumb Amy, trying to figure out if there was going to be a hero and who would it be. The twists really got me! I had so much fun reading that book! I finished it in two days.

Profile Avatar Melani L. Feb 2025

Great twist at the end of the book. Loved listening along. Thanks Freida

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2024

Loved this! First Freida McFadden book and I am hooked!

Profile Avatar Heather B. Nov 2024

I had a hard time suspending my belief in the real world for this book to feel plausible. The ending was almost satisfactory, but I don't think I would recommend the book to anyone.

Profile Avatar alyciadianne Nov 2024

Can’t explain how much I love Frieda McFadden. Her books are always *chefs kiss*. Great narrator and wonderful story.

Profile Avatar Kevin W. Sep 2024

I thought in the middle in knew the ending. I was wring. Very good listen very good narriator.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2024

this book was so boring. could have been edited to 1/3

Profile Avatar Sandra F. Aug 2024

“Locked room” mysteries aren’t my favorite, but Freida McFadden makes it work. Fabulous twist in the last few minutes.

Profile Avatar Desiree Miller Jul 2024

Easy listen for the most part. I felt like it was predictable towards the end when the drama really picked up. i wish the main character didn't whine so much, an absolute nervous wreck. if you want a casual background book this is a good one but it wasn't mind-blowing or frightening. I think the author did well with her ending and expanding on the main character the way she did. overall it felt teen fiction with an unrealistic psych ward twist.

Profile Avatar Maria J. Jul 2024

The beginning of the book was really strong and kept me engaged though as the story progressed it became cringe and corny.

Profile Avatar Latoyah E. Jul 2024

I was waiting for it to get really good…

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2024

Did not like it at all. It just dragged on and on and at times was very repetitive. Also the narrator was very annoying to me. She just doesn’t write with any depth. Very surface level stiff and predictable.

Profile Avatar Graciela J. Jul 2024

Hated how the narrator said schizophre(e)nia, but otherwise a fine novel. More tolerable than The Teacher, but I still don't really understand why Freida Mcfadden is such a big hit.

Profile Avatar Tammy Jul 2024

Was a good read. Didn’t expect the ending at all

Profile Avatar Brittany G. Apr 2024

I loved it!
