Summary
The line between sanity and insanity is blurred in this classic novella by Anton Chekhov. The disillusioned idealist Dr. Rabin is in charge of a provincial lunatic asylum, overseeing with weary, dubious policies a motley group of patients, a group that mirrors in microcosm all of human and especially Russian society. Seeking answers to profound questions, Dr. Rabin enters into dialogues with both staff members and patients, trying to make sense out of what has become of his life, until it becomes less and less clear who is the doctor and who is the patient. Written with obvious reformist concerns about the dehumanization of "lunatics," the story is also a harrowing parable about the meaning of human existence. Summary by Expatriate.

A fascinating story that enters the mind and all its madness

A bunch of Russian men are having numerous conversations with a narrator who makes Ben Stein sound like Keith Morris.

Probably one of my least favorite books. But it passed the time while cleaning etc. it was ok. I wish the narrator Lhasa some inflection vs being the same throughout the whole book.

A bit confusing to follow the dialogue with only one voice. Names a bit confusing as well. Interesting turn of events. The end was rather quick. B

The story lost something due to the narration. Readers change every chapter or two and they reintroduce the book each time. Another note is that this was in the comedy section, I found it to be a rather bleak tale.

This is pretty timeless and relevant. A challenge to narrate.
