Summary
“A mesmerizing novel about a family in crisis.”— Miami Herald

A disquieting and ultimately uplifting novel about a marriage, a family, and human resilience in the face of tragedy, from Wally Lamb, the New York Times bestselling author of The Hour I First Believed and I Know This Much Is True.

After 27 years of marriage and three children, Anna Oh—wife, mother, outsider artist—has fallen in love with Viveca, the wealthy Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her success. They plan to wed in the Oh family’s hometown of Three Rivers in Connecticut. But the wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens a Pandora’s Box of toxic secrets—dark and painful truths that have festered below the surface of the Ohs’ lives.

We Are Water is a layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection, told in the alternating voices of the Ohs—nonconformist, Anna; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest. It is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art.

With humor and compassion, Wally Lamb brilliantly captures the essence of human experience and the ways in which we search for love and meaning in our lives.

Fascinating insight to a variety of characters as Wally Lamb does so well. Thoroughly enjoyed this read, even though there were parts that were difficult, I appreciated Mr. Lamb's courage in going to this dark place. Layers of complication and revelation.

At times difficult to listen to bc the writing is so intense and boldly shines lights on such frightening and uncomfortable topics...yet at the same time it was gripping and hard to put down. Wally Lamb fans won't be disappointed.

Wally Lamb's book, "She's Come Undone", is my all time favorite book. I've read everything he has written, so I picked this without a second thought. I won a free audio subscription from Dr. Laura and used one of my free credits. That was a mistake. I should have shelled out the money to buy the book. The best thing about this audio - the Dr. Laura chapter. I loved this. It was so smart and whity for Lamb to bring the Andrew character's story in with a call to Dr. Laura. Lamb must really listen to Dr. Laura, because he got her down pat. I also liked it that every character had their own reader. What I hated was the reader/actor for Annie Oh - the mother in this book. Over-dramatic, slow, and completely annoying. And Lamb didn't help as he really went overboard, pages and pages of minutia that I could have gone without (for instance, the long ride in the car with the maid and the maid's son. Who cared? I get that it was insight into her own mothering, but annoying nonetheless). I was shocked (which is hard for me to be) when the villian's parts were read. Lamb did an amazing job of bringing humanity to a monster, bringing insight into the minds of a pedophile, how he got that way, I really gained some insight here as before I could never understand how someone could hurt little kids like that. If you were sexually abused as a child, especially if you are a woman, this might be too much for you - very detailed, very hard to hear. I actually work in a men's prison, with sex offenders, and I have tried for years to get into their heads and figure out how they got here, this book definitely helped me there. Because it's a work of Lamb, I can't give it anything but 5 stars. But I'm being generous. It was just too long. Especially all the Annie parts, which is unfortunately, since this really was her story.
