We Went to War: An Army Combat Chaplain’s Deployment to Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade

We Went to War is the true story of an Army combat chaplain deployed to Afghanistan with the legendary 2nd Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.

In 2012, Chaplain Tom Latham deployed to Wardak Province, Afghanistan, one of the most dangerous regions in the country. Living among paratroopers at remote combat outposts, he shared in their hardships, ministered to wounded, and witnessed the courage of soldiers facing enemy attacks, improvised explosive devices, rocket fire, and suicide bombings.

Written largely during the deployment itself, this memoir captures the reality of war from a perspective rarely heard—that of the combat chaplain who walks beside soldiers in their darkest moments. Filled with humor, faith, sacrifice, and battlefield experiences, We Went to War is a tribute to the paratroopers of the 2-503rd of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the men and women who served alongside them.

For veterans, military families, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking an authentic account of modern warfare, this audiobook offers an unfiltered look at combat, leadership, and the bonds forged in war.
