A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.

In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company.

I am just spit-balling here, but I think this should come with a trigger warning As this book deals with some pretty heavy topics. Albeit in a phenomenally humorous way, it still deals with mental health, severe mental health and the under insured. It also touches on fertility issues. It deals with a cheating spouse, a widow and child. The book itself is wonderfully written, the narrator was a little flat at times and I almost didn't finish the book. The story line got better and there were times where the narrator seemed to actually believe in what she was reading and not just reading words from a page as if she was reading a chart of numbers. The writer takes you a long through a journey of one woman's struggles to find herself after the dissolution of her marriage. The story could be anyone, your best friend, your sister, your mother, your aunt or maybe even you. There's enough humor thrown in to keep it real, but, I heard myself in her monologue at times. So I give the book 5 stars but the narrator I gave 4. I would have given 3.5 if that was an option.

This book is like a coming of age story for a 40-ish year old woman. It covers deep, difficult topics like depression, infidelity, suicidal thoughts, and death. But there's also humor and hope. Friendships are built and the meaning of happiness is explored. The characters are full and rich, and I was not ready for the story to end when I came to the last page. Although the ending is predictable (and to be honest, exactly what I was hoping for), I couldn't remove even a fraction of a star. The way the humor and conversational banter balance the seriousness of the topics is brilliant.

This is a well written book. The themes are deep, but the characters bring a lightness to it all. I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job portraying the characters.

Very good! Worth your time!

Filthy language and course sexual content degrading to both men and women was an unnecessary component of this book. How many ways can the F-word be used in one narrative? I had to read it for book club so … Despite the smut, it was a thoughtful story of resilience, showcasing the value of life. It’s books like this that make me wish there was a rating system for books like there are for movies. Ugh!

This book had controversial reviews. It seemed that people either loved it or absolutely hated it! I’m not sure what I would have thought about it had I actually read the book and not listened to it. The narrator was incredible! I actually really enjoyed this book and don’t think that people Should be swayed by the DNF comments. I think everybody should give it a try and see what they think. Maybe it’s just that a different time in your life that things hit differently.

⸻ A fantastic story with real emotional depth. The narrator brought each character to life in such a fun and realistic way—I could picture every person vividly as I listened, which made the story even more engaging. It was filled with genuine heartbreak and a satisfying resolution, reflecting shadows of my own life in a way that felt deeply personal. This made the book even more meaningful for me. It’s one of those stories that stays with you long after the final chapter. Highly recommend!

Absolutely LOVED it. It’s one of my favorite books I’ve ready it awhile! Though my comfort reads are normally romcom/feel good books, I absolutely loved the depth of the storylines. It was so much more than just another love story. Honestly, I would call the love story a secondary plot. [potential spoiler removed] Loved, loved, loved it.

I difficult and triggering topic for some, it was more about the unique characters and their impacts on one another’s lives. Serious topic yet a light and funny wonderful read.
