Summary
A decades-old photo. An unknown child. A secret someone would kill to keep buried.

When private investigator Martina Monroe is hired to identify the infant in a decades-old photograph, the case seems simple enough. But the search leads her back to the hometown she swore she’d never return to—a place haunted by old wounds, buried lies, and people desperate to keep the past hidden.

As Martina digs deeper, the questions begin to multiply. Who is the child in the photo? Why does no one want her asking questions? And what happened all those years ago that still has the town living in fear?

Then the first body turns up.

What began as a quiet investigation quickly spirals into something far more dangerous. With the killer closing in and every clue dragging her deeper into a web of secrets, Martina must uncover the truth before the past claims more victims—including her.

Because in this town, some secrets were never meant to be found.

What She Left is a gripping crime thriller packed with murder, buried secrets, and shocking twists. Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Lisa Regan, and James Patterson.

I liked the main characters, and the mystery intself was enticing. However, the writing style was too straightforward for me. The side characters felt less like people and more like vessels to deliver information. The dialogue was also plain and repetitive at times with many simple greetings and characters thinking a thought and then saying that thought aloud word for word. I couldn't distinguish one character's stream of dialogue from another's. As for the narration, it was as straightforwad as the story. I prefer when narrators do distinct voices and act out the parts. But the narrator's voice didn't distract from the story and did the job.
