A solid, creepy classic. Nine-year-old Christie moves into an old house where no kids have lived in fifty years—and starts hearing a baby cry even when the wind is still. The small-town Colorado setting, the dark mine history, and the growing sense of dread work perfectly together. Simple writing, strong atmosphere, and that classic John Saul “something is very wrong with the children” vibe. Quick, chilling read that sticks with you. Highly recommend if you like old-school horror.
