Unabridged Audiobook
I’ll start with the positive: I really enjoyed the narration. The narrator did a great job distinguishing between the different characters, which made it easy to follow along. As for the book itself, this may just come down to personal preference, but it tried to cover too many interesting topics at once without spending enough time on any of them. Themes like 19th-century female doctors, serial killers in New York City, racial tensions, and Catholic orphanages all had the potential to be fascinating on their own. Instead, each topic felt more like an introduction than a fully developed story. I kept wanting the book to go deeper into one or two of those ideas rather than touching briefly on so many. Because of that, I’m not sure much of it will stay with me long term. I do wonder if reading the physical book rather than listening might make for a richer experience.
