Unabridged Audiobook
Tony Birch has a way of delivering insightful depictions of deeply disturbing subject matter in a manner that feels light and can be easily understood. Although the issues are heavy, his gift as a story teller is revealing those harsh truths gently. We acquire a deep understanding with love and respect for the integrity of his characters. For me, the joy of Odette’s journey is in her decisions, her adventures and her interactions that softens the harrowing hardships she has endured. Yet there is no shirking the suffering colonialist attitudes has cruelly inflicted on First Nation people.
Beautifully narrated, transporting me instantly to the time and place unfolding in the story. The story itself is gripping, powerful and oh so important. It was heartbreaking, enlightening and entertaining all at the same time. I chose this book at random and am so very glad I did.
Such a beautifully written book. Authentic, easy to listen to and tells a critical part of Australian history from an individual perspective.
I loved this book. The story, the narration, the lessons. Very relatable in its history of our Indigenous Australians, which was shockingly not so long ago.
This is a beautiful story of a brave woman and life in early/mid 20th century Australia. I was unaware of how badly the aboriginal people were treated and this story was eye-opening. The narration was wonderful.
