Why were the other kids at school obsessed with Britney Spears instead of The Goon Show?
Why don't people ever say what they mean?
And... Why is everyone chewing so loudly?

Comedian Pierre Novellie was on stage when a heckler suggested he was autistic. Usually, this disruption would be water off a duck's back but two things made this heckler different: first, he was himself autistic. Second, he turned out to be absolutely right.

This random encounter led to a diagnosis of autism at the age of 31 that unravelled his world, explained his struggles and answered questions that had bothered him for his entire life.

At once a hilarious and insightful journey through autism and neurodivergence, an entertaining explainer for the uninitiated and observational comedy for the neurodiverse, this is the perfect read for anyone who has ever asked themselves: why can't I just enjoy things?

The audiobook includes an exclusive Q&A with comedian and BudPod co-host, Phil Wang.

Excellent all around. If you already know you’re autistic or suspect you might be, this is a helpful guide. The humor and vulnerable self disclosure allowed me to look at myself and laugh and think “oh my gosh, thank you! So much of me suddenly makes sense.” For non autistic listeners/readers it’s an informative but lighthearted way to learn about people you may know and not fully understand.

I am a late diagnosed autistic person, and I greatly enjoyed this book. I think there are some small parts where non autistics are going to lose the plot or think Pierre has lost the plot, but I can guarantee if you stick with it you’ll understand your autistic friends and family a lot more after absorbing this book.

Phenomenal book. I could relate very much as an adult being diagnosed in 2024. From the annoying sounds, double empathy problem, special interests, relationships with non-autistics, being born in South Africa, and so much more. Was very helpful and eye opening in many perspectives and the addition of humour and great storytelling abilities from Pierre was fantastic.

Able to speak on his journey with ASD in simple, funny and real life ways that kept me engaged throughout. Just like him at the comedy show, it’s encouraged me to go out and do some more research! Recommend for anyone who’s curious how a neurodivergent mind may work, the struggles that can come with it, and the many many masks a lot of us learn to build to survive.

I found the book insightful and relateable.

This was very informative. My brother is one of those high-functioning people on the autistic spectrum, and we never knew (he got his "diagnosis" this year at age 59). This author was quite funny without making light of the circumstances. My brother appreciated me making an effort to understand instead of denying or downplaying.

Very eye opening

I can relate to so much!! I always prefer a book narrated by the author as they feel what they have written, but this was a little robotic. Still very much worth a listen.

Highly recommend this book! An entertaining way to learn about what a person with autism experiences. The author isn't speaking for everyone with autism, nor does he claim to do so, but hearing one person's direct experience with hindsight is eye opening.

I'm a 32 year old female just diagnosed with ADHD and about to have an ASD assessment. I found this book funny, informative, and easy to listen to. I related to many aspects of Pierre's experience, and it helped me better understand my other family members who are most likely on the spectrum too. I recommend listening if you're in a similar situation to me, or if you're neurotypical and wanting to better understand the autistic experience. It's well written and narrated, and is an overall humerous and enjoyable listen.

I really enjoyed this book! I chose it to gain insight into my son and brother, and ended it with a whole lot of explanation regarding myself and my husband, as well! I thought… “There’s no way we could ALL be autistic…” but then the author speaks to this situation exactly and it just made sense!

Oh dear. What a dangerously insightful book, on my own behalf as well as my child who I am researching for. As narrators go, once I got into his style he was incredible and engaging, a unique personal style for a very personal book.

I really enjoyed this book. I laughed out loud many a times! I liked getting an inside look into the life of a person with autism. I'm planning to listen to it again to solidify my learning so that I can better understand how people with autism think.

Enlightening and amuzing

Profile Avatar Michael B. Jun 2025

A very interesting book exploring all aspects of living with autism. I would be happier to recommend it to friends if it did not contain so many four letter expletives.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2025

This book gives insight into a neurospicy mind and makes me feel quite seen, even if I am officially only diagnosed with ADHD.
