TLS, OBSERVER, SUNDAY TIMES, FT, GUARDIAN, DAILY MAIL AND EVENING STANDARD BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2017

Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity and yet it is increasingly neglected in twenty-first-century society, with devastating consequences: every major disease in the developed world - Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, diabetes - has very strong causal links to deficient sleep.

In this audiobook, the first of its kind written by a scientific expert, Professor Matthew Walker explores twenty years of cutting-edge research to solve the mystery of why sleep matters. Looking at creatures from across the animal kingdom as well as major human studies, Why We Sleep delves into everything from what really happens during REM sleep to how caffeine and alcohol affect sleep and why our sleep patterns change across a lifetime, transforming our appreciation of the extraordinary phenomenon that safeguards our existence.

Includes a bonus PDF of graphs and diagrams.

Magnificent book, covering one of the most important, yet one of the most overlooked aspects of our lives and well being. I was astonished by the depth of author's insights, ample scientific data, and yet simple, as well as approachable manner of laying the content out. This book is a life changer. Listening to it, I understood that I was looking for ways to improve my emotional and physical wellness in the wrong places, when the answer was always right there. Several slight adjustments to my behaviour and schedule, and I feel that a whole new, a lot happier, person is emerging. I also enjoyed the calm and soothing voice of the narrator, although the volume of narration sound could be a little higher.

'Why we sleep' is really, really well written and spoken. it is scientifically interesting and has really made me reduce my caffeine intake. it has made me really appreciate and recognise how important sleep is for our health and well-being. I completely recommend this book. the author is humble, funny and uses fantastic metaphors. The narrator is calming (but when talking about sleep, sometimes too calm!). loved it.

Love it! I’ll most likely read it over and over at random chapters, as with a few other favourites I have in the bedside drawer! I want this info to be embedded in my subconscious, as humans we forget quickly and revert back to type. I for one!
