Summary
A short satirical thriller from bestselling author Freida McFadden.

My husband is dead.

I attended his funeral. I watched his casket be lowered six feet into the ground. (Actually, it may have been only five feet, but that still seems like more than enough.) And then we ate an array of finger sandwiches and deviled eggs and miniature beef wellingtons that cost more than my first car.

My point is, Grant is gone. And so are all his many, many deep, dark secrets which I never really ever bothered to ask him about. He is never coming back.

So why do I still see his face everywhere I go?

The Widow's Husband's Secret Lie is an utterly addictive, unputdownable, nail-biting, absolutely gripping psychological thriller novella with a shocking, breathtaking, heartstopping, spine-chilling twist that you won't see coming, will leave you stunned, and will literally have you picking your jaw up off the floor and bringing it to the nearest hospital for major facial reconstructive surgery.

Total satire, just as promised. The narrator was so brilliant in the reading that I found myself literally laughing out loud at points. If you’re expecting the typical Frida McFadden story, you will be disappointed. This short story highlights her talent as a writer. She is NOT a one trick pony. I loved seeing another side of her talent, yet still being surprised by unexpected twists and turns.

Absolutely awful! It was so bad I thought it was a joke….

So funny! Ridiculously and fantastically absurd!

Satire failure. This was a major disappointment from one of my favorite authors. This book began with good humor, like when she asked herself how much surfactant she needs in her shampoo , but took a quick nosedive into stupidity. Questioning if McFadden paid a 11 year old a buck-fifty, a Happy Meal and a Pokémon ball to write this disaster.

I really liked this short story and wish there were more of them.

I found the story confusing, but intriguing mystery unbelievable and at the end wow couldn’t believe it. I loved it.

5 stars all the way! Loved this.

I am so grateful that this book was available via VIP credit and I didn't use a regular credit on it. First, I want to say I have read/listened to 10+ books of Frieda McFadden and this is the WORST. I loved all her other books. I can not believe how terrible this book was. *SPOILER*I'm not sure if anyone remembers the whole white/gold vs. blue/black dress shenanigans that shook up the internet a few years ago, but a different of opinion led to an overly obsessed husband who tried to get his wife to ONLY wear black/blue dresses. THEN! It wasn't the twin brother (which was a bad twist in itself...) he turned out to have triplets!AND!what the heck is wrong with this woman with her installing LED lights to try to avoid getting pregnant, instead of GETTING AN IUD!!!!LASTLY,Taking a COVID test and mistakenly thinking she had taken a PREGNANCY test and it was positive, so she SWORE she was pregnant. Lord have mercy.

The narrator was great, the book is great, just the ending, I’m still Wondering about it ‍️

Awful, stupid story which is so ridiculous ! Waste of credit it’s honestly one of the worst books I’ve ever listened too.

I love this author, but did not like this book. I realize it was satirical, but I just couldn’t wait for it to be over.

Stupid

Profile Avatar pb Jul 2025

Well...I know it was a satire, but it was just too silly. It had good moments, but overall it just didn't work.

Profile Avatar Janette D. Apr 2025

Love this short!! Frieda is a genius!

Profile Avatar Laura C. Apr 2025

Ridiculous. It’s beyond satirical, beyond farcical. The first half held together well. But then it just spiraled out of control.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2026

kept my attention throughout the book. I could read it again.

Profile Avatar Cecilia A. Apr 2026

The characters were boring although sometimes incredibly dumb enough to elicit a laugh. The length of the book was ok. The narrator was easy to listen to but the plot was lame

Profile Avatar Felicia R. Mar 2026

Terrible. Thankfully it was short.

Profile Avatar Veronica V. Feb 2026

Great

Profile Avatar Caitlin S. Feb 2026

Not my favorite. Satire came across as just stupid.

Profile Avatar Damian R. Feb 2026

Very good
