INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • #1 AMAZON BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR SO FAR 2025

An ENTHRALLING new novel from the NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING author of Migrations and Once There Were Wolves

'A WILDLY TALENTED writer.' ―Emily St. John Mandel
“SPELLBINDING...Exceptionally imagined, thoroughly humane.” —Washington Post
“Abounds with EVOCATIVE nature writing.” —The New York Times Book Review

A family on a remote island. A mysterious woman washed ashore. A rising storm on the horizon.

Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers, but with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants. Until, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman mysteriously washes ashore.

Isolation has taken its toll on the Salts, but as they nurse the woman, Rowan, back to strength, it begins to feel like she might just be what they need. Rowan, long accustomed to protecting herself, starts imagining a future where she could belong to someone again.

But Rowan isn’t telling the whole truth about why she set out for Shearwater. And when she discovers sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave, she realizes Dominic is keeping his own secrets. As the storms on Shearwater gather force, they all must decide if they can trust each other enough to protect the precious seeds in their care before it’s too late—and if they can finally put the tragedies of the past behind them to create something new, together.

A novel of breathtaking twists, dizzying beauty, and ferocious love, Wild Dark Shore is about the impossible choices we make to protect the people we love, even as the world around us disappears.

'This contemplative, heart-wrenching story is a unique and engaging listening experience made even more vibrant by its narration.” —Bookpage (Starred Review)

'The ensemble narration brings this intense story to life.” —AudioFile

Fell into the story quickly. Relevant and factual about climate change and also trauma as a lived experience and how it affects our interactions with others.

It was good! Read it in a book club. A bit slow the first 3/5ths. It picked up! Collectively, our book club of 8 girls rated it 3.2

I actually think it was well written and very interesting. Unfortunately I found it to be a bit depressing. Not that there isn't cause for hope here..... The idea that staying under difficult circumstances is hopeful... protecting the vulnerable is hopeful, but I felt for the children and was ill at ease with the whole setting..... I suppose I just wanted something more uplifting

Interesting book. Original. Suspenseful. Didn’t live up to the hype for me. A little weird to me.

6 stars if I could give an extra. Loved this book. Very invested in characters and the locale. Believe the hype and listen to this book.

Such an interesting and thought provoking novel that has a great mystery as well as a few minor mysteries. The descriptions of the island (on which a family of 4 who live on the island as well as a mystery woman who washes ashore) are exceptional and the narrators are excellent. I learned more about the necessary work done to save nature for our world than I expected but done so well and woven into the story that it was captivating!

Terrific book. Loved these characters and the tense dramatic landscape woven into the characters. Perfect narration made it lovely to listen to every word. Great story and lits to think about fir our future.

I liked it. I wanted to know how things turned out. It was investing and entertaining. However, I didn't feel so connected to the characters. Some parts we felt a bit flat - Even though the momentum leading up was suspenseful. At the end, the wrapped it up pretty quickly and it was done. Kinda weird. Not so memorable for me. I like the narration from the female, not as much from the male (he seemed breathy & dramtic. Like a romance novel sound)
