“Tana French’s best and most intricately nuanced novel yet.” —The New York Times

An “extraordinary” (Stephen King) and “mesmerizing” (LA Times) new standalone novel from the master of crime and suspense and author of the forthcoming novel The Searcher.

From the writer who “inspires cultic devotion in readers” (The New Yorker) and has been called “incandescent” by Stephen King, “absolutely mesmerizing” by Gillian Flynn, and “unputdownable” (People) comes a gripping new novel that turns a crime story inside out.

Toby is a happy-go-lucky charmer who’s dodged a scrape at work and is celebrating with friends when the night takes a turn that will change his life—he surprises two burglars who beat him and leave him for dead. Struggling to recover from his injuries, beginning to understand that he might never be the same man again, he takes refuge at his family’s ancestral home to care for his dying uncle Hugo. Then a skull is found in the trunk of an elm tree in the garden—and as detectives close in, Toby is forced to face the possibility that his past may not be what he has always believed.

A spellbinding standalone from one of the best suspense writers working today, The Witch Elm asks what we become, and what we’re capable of, when we no longer know who we are.

A really clever thriller filled with twists and turns, but never confusing. The novel is long and sometimes I wished that it had been edited down a bit. There were passages of what could only be considered whining by the main character, made worse by a very good narrator who did the "whine" very well. Once that was over with (it is mainly around the beginning), the story was quick-moving and fun to listen to. The narrator does a great job. He has a soft Irish accent and was able to take on the male and female voices without any problem. I recommend this book if you want to have to think.

    LOVED this book

  • Kimberly E.

slow and boring but the narrator had a nice voice

  • Angela P.

This book was very slow and dragged on a bit. It didn’t get interesting until towards the middle of the novel. There were also a few unexpected twists towards the end as well. At first it was difficult to understand a lot of the Irish slang, but I eventually got used to it. I would consider listening to another novel by this author. The narrator does a pretty decent job as well.

Did not enjoy at all. Not what I expected

  • Alexina K.

Clever story line but even better narration. Paul’s voice was captivating and perfectly emotional.

  • Ruth M.

I loved it! Tana French is the only female author l can think of that is able to write 1st person, believable male protagonists.

  • Lori M.

Great listen. Endearing characters keep you engaged from page 1. Plenty of turns made it hard to stop listening between opportunities. Highly recommend.

  • Carol M.

The heart of this book is a fairly good murder mystery with a couple of interesting twists. But the endless introspective first person narrative had me hoping he would get to the point. The narrator’s delivery was overdramatized at times and the end was somewhat limp.

  • Amy W.

As a previous Tana French fan, I am very disappointed by her latest. Improbable plot, way too much self indulgence by the main character, over emoting by the narrator. But then again it is Tana French so that counts for at least 3 stars.
