Unabridged Audiobook
Content is timely, engaging, well written, passionate, clever, humorous, and an incredibly important read
Gosh. This one is painful. I didn’t love this book BUT that doesn’t mean it isn’t well-written and isn’t worth reading so I had to contemplate the number of stars to give. I chose to be fair. Not loving how the subject matter was portrayed doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not good reading so I went with 3 stars. My five star ratings are saved for epic reads and this certainly was not that. This book was promised to be hilarious. It’s not. It’s barbed and sarcastic, which I typically love. But this book’s humor is not universal. One must think and believe wholeheartedly EXACTLY as the author does to embrace the humor. Even in those parts I did agree with the author, it wasn’t “hilarious”. It was smirk-worthy at best. What I found most frustrating is that the author has utter disdain for much of what she discusses and those who don’t believe as she does…and I could understand that as many of us often do the same…but what she found disdainful she also emulated to those on the opposite side of her political viewpoint. Hypocrisy at its best. And that’s not funny. Good God if I read “fascist” and “nazi” one more time before the book ended, I would have dropped two more stars! For someone as wholeheartedly promised as “smart”, I expected more than the unbelievably shallow foray into dissenting opinions than was given. Certainly a wider variety of descriptive terms at the very least! Lindy is obviously well-educated and well-read on the subjects she is passionate about but if you are going to go aggressively against the opposite party, more than a toe dip depth should be offered for a meaningful dialogue. And maybe that’s the problem. It wasn’t meaningful dialogue. Many reviewers said it was “preaching”. She was definitely on a soap box but I don’t have an issue with that. Her book, her soapbox! My problem was with the vitriol spewed against those who don’t believe exactly as she does. She didn’t even give consideration that folks on the conservative side COULD believe as she does on many subjects. She was broad stroke condescending, demeaning, and dismissive. That’s not smart. It’s not educated. It’s just a rant. Which lends space for a lack of credibility. And I think she’s smart enough to have presented better and far more credible. So this was disappointing.
Content is too dramatic.
