Tacitus (c. AD 56-117), whose name means 'silent,' was anything but. An acclaimed orator, lawyer, and statesman, he eventually became consul, the highest elected office of the Roman Empire. He married the daughter of Agricola, conquerer of Britain. As a historian, he is known for the dramatic, concise style of his five surviving works.
