Juan Felipe Herrera was born the son of migrant farmworkers, and his childhood was spent on the move. He was educated at UCLA and Stanford University and completed his MFA at the University of Iowa. He is the author of more than thirty books, including short stories, prose, young adult novels, children's books, and poetry. In 2015 he was appointed the twenty-first Poet Laureate of the United States.
