Dan Cushman was born in Osceola, Michigan, and grew up on the Cree Indian reservation in Montana. After graduating from the University of Montana, he pursued a career in mining as a prospector, assayer, and geologist. He received the Golden Spur Award from the Western Writers of America for his novel, The Silver Mountain.
