    Summary
A misanthropic matriarch leaves her eccentric family in crisis when she mysteriously disappears in this 'whip-smart and divinely funny' novel that inspired the movie starring Cate Blanchett (New York Times).

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect; and to 15-year-old Bee, she is her best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette vanishes. It all began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle -- and people in general -- has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, and secret correspondence -- creating a compulsively readable and surprisingly touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

Eh. Story gets a little wacky at the end. Had some good potential there but idk didn't do it for me. The narrator is very talented though.

Loved the narration and thought she captured B's voice and emotion. This book was full of laughs as well as drama.. It was really well constructed. Loved the book!

I liked the story in the beginning, then when I thought about what was this all about I really didn't like It. Self indulgence story. The narrator could tune down a bit the dramatization.

This is not my normal genre, I was not really a fan. I must be missing something because of other good reviews. It was very hard to get through.

Loved the book -- and loved the narrator even more. I cried when it was over, as I wanted it to keep going. This was terrific, funny, smart, fast-moving, and very well-written -- and yet I think the audio version is probably even better than the written version. A+!

At first it is hard to get into the story since it is mostly correspondence from one character to another. But, once you get into the story it makes sense. The narrator was excellant. She was a master at using different voices. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the reading

Profile Avatar Jessica Foster Dec 2012

This was a very interesting book! the characters were well htought out, and as a Seattle transplant I found myself laughing out loud at some of Bernadette's critiques of the city.

Profile Avatar Jennifer budde Dec 2012

Funny, original story with great characters. Takes a little while to get into since most of it is told through correspondence, but all the set up pays off in the end.
