In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be 'positive' all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. 'F**k positivity,' Mark Manson says. 'Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it.' In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—'not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault.' Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

Don't let the title throw you off. Mr. Manson offers excellent insights into a great way to approach life and work. It's certainly warranted a second listen. Highly recommended!

Snore. Advice: Read all reviews (good and bad) before committing to this book. People either LOVED it with a 5 star rating, or hated it and rated it as a 1 star. Depends on the personality. My thoughts on my 1 star rating: The F word is way overused (it’s in nearly every single sentence) The topic was super boring right outta the gate with no depth. I can’t wait to read something better and cleanse my brain of this useless information.

What a refreshing read. This book cuts to the chase and says exactly what people need to hear.

This is very much style (and a super promising title) over substance. It may carry 15 mins of core wisdoms, ruthlessly drawn out with anecdotal stories ... Stories that failed to connect me to the author in any way and that and led me to the conclusion that they might well be a life-long narcissist (of one kind or another). Readers of self help-books might easily be dismissed as being unreliable, skewed, or perhaps over-needy. But pseudo wisdom has a certain unmistakable smell and this is a pungent read ...

I had to stop listening because I felt like I was listening to some random jock at a bar improvise a lecture on life lessons as opposed to someone with intelligence, wisdom, and compassion speaking. Yes, it's obvious that anyone can write a self-help book, but I wouldn't recommend this one. Much preferred Gary Bishop's "Unf*ck Yourself."

Profile Avatar

Witty, engaging, funny, surprisingly profound. 10/10 will be recommending this book to family and friends alike. Frankly, I think this should be required reading for everyone, especially in today's sociopolitical environment.

Profile Avatar

Very well written and practical book, it gives you a sober view on what we call 'positivity literature' nowadays. Also, it points out the need of negative events in your life, it's fundamential part of our life and also success we wish for.

Serious unfiltered truth about being accountable , taking back the load of life and making the most with what you got without deflecting excuses ! Love it !

Profile Avatar

Very very boring... if you like the expression "Not giving a f***" then you'll love it. If however you want a bit more for your money or maybe just a little more interesting then don't bother. I'm baffled by the 5 star ratings.

Great read. I am interested in metal health and positive pychology. This is both my profession and my academic background. And this book had supported much of the up to date research and more importantly a fun read

I understand the author may have used the f bomb in the title to get publicity, but I couldn't get past the first chapter because, seemingly, every other word was f. I skipped ahead to the last cd-same thing, f, f, f, f, f ad infinitum, ad nauseam.

Profile Avatar

If self help is your thing then it’s great read! I already don’t give a f#ck, so I didn’t learn too much, but enjoyed it non the less. Narration was awesome!

I read this book in the past and enjoyed it, so decided to listen to it narrated by the author. It is full of simple but practical advise, and also made me laugh out loud in places. Highly recommend

Profile Avatar

Fun with pun intended...recommend. What I learned; rembember to look closely at yourself when you meet adversity because most of the time it you and your problem not others. So nothing new but an easy book to listen to and some might finally realize that it really is them and not anyone else who's problematic.

I don’t agree with everything the author said. He has seen alot, but is also very young. He did raise a few good points though. I enjoyed this book alot. This is the first book ever I finished in one day, while being isolated with a positive RAT for coronavirus. I had the time but my eyes were too tired to read due to the illness. Thanks to the narrator. I had never liked the idea of audiobooks. I had always preferred to read each line with my own eyes. But this experience has definitely changed my view on that. This narrator adds life to the book.

I feel like I should be the sales person for this book, it’s so good I want to buy all and give away for free. And I totally believe the narrator did this book justice because I think the voice in our heads sometimes doesn’t sound as candid and free as the narrator of this book was...which drilled the message loud and clear into my heart and mind.

This book was so full of privilege and mansplaining I couldn’t deal with it. Of course it’s easy for a man with no children or responsibilities other than himself to give less f’s. I get the premise of doing what you value and staying true to yourself over the opinion of others but the examples were so obtuse and unaware of the reality of the many real and tangible barriers that this man would never face. I couldn’t keep listening, bummed I invested a credit and any time on this. Not for me.

Profile Avatar

This book is over rated, repeated and regurgitation of other self help books. Lack scientific/psychological and or medical causes behind behaviour. It might help the beginners but if you have already read a book or two on self help, this might be boring for you.

Beyond stupid. The entire book is him saying “stop caring but don’t stop caring because you don’t want to look like an ass and there’s no need to try for anything but if you don’t try hard enough you won’t go anywhere or do anything in life” like what? Also to prove his point he used school shootings as an example. Twice. He also claimed that rape is bad but it’s also the women’s responsibility to deal with the aftermath. Don’t listen. Terrible and a waste of time. A joke really.

This was a great listen, some people have complained about the overuse of the F word; it’s used a lot in the first chapter, maybe for impact, but it does tend to tail off after that.. If one can learn to let go of stigma that one has built up in ones mind with this word. It provides a useful and thought provoking way of looking at things.. personally I like to broaden my horizon’s in all directions, and don’t let someones use of one word close me off to an insightful way off thinking about the world

Profile Avatar

Profile Avatar

I am not a softy but the overuse of the F-word early in the book is almost unbearable for someone who doesn't use it all the time. Once you get into the substance of the book the power of the content takes over and the language just blends into the landscape. I highly recommend this book for everyone who is tired of the BS excuse mentality and the degradation of common sense in society. Take control of your emotions, make better decisions and stop being selectively outraged at everything that doesn't go your way and learn the subtle art of not giving a F*ck!

Profile Avatar
Anonymous

A self reflection, makes you look back at yourself ask why you do things the way you do, why you react to things the way you do. Makes you ask why you really care about what you always find yourself caring about. One you go through it, you realise life isn't as complicated as you've made it to be. You just do not have to give a f*ck about everything but rather pick what truly matters to you and give a f*ck about that. This was a true self-help book, it showed you a path to help yourself rather than try and throw buzz words at you.

Profile Avatar

I would’ve given this book five enthusiastic stars had the author issued a warning that people who struggle with depression shouldn’t stand on the edges of cliffs as an antidote to their predicament. This is a recipe for tragedy. Every other idea I found useful and helpful. I wish this scene hadn’t been the last in the book.

Excellent read. Feel as though this book was written about me. Don't be alarmed by the title.

Profile Avatar
Sylvia S.

The first part of the book follows a logic and as a self-improvement, what should I do with my life is rather interesting, Basically the premise is that we need to base our lives on our values, I agree with this and everything flows from this. The second part of the book seemed to be an add on, enlarged upon some of the content, even repeated some of the content, in the first part. Good to listen to while doing the ironing or going for a walk, and led to further reflection on values, can't be bad!

I’m not really enjoying the very frat boy-oriented failure examples, such as ‘you’ll never get to feel Jennifer Anniston’s tits’, with suggestions to ‘enjoy improving your golf swing’. These are things I will never give a fuck about. There are some interesting philosophical references sprinkled within a narrative that could be a transcript of a higher level conversation between high philosophy students at a party.

Actually really good? Was recommended to me but I didn't really listen after they said that it was a self help book. Saw it in the store, had a credit, gave it a try and I was pleasantly surprised. I learned something. The lesson is pretty simple when you get down to it but the author hammers the point home with multiple instances of reinforcement. Going for my second read now and decided to leave a review from the first read through. Good flow, narrator is A+. Recommended.

Reading this book made me feel like I was sitting in a bar talking to a drunk, middle aged white man telling me how he thinks I should live my life. There are many other self help books and programs that actually present evidence about why we should put these strategies in practice, how to actually do it and why it helps. It was also quite disgusting how the author describes a woman being obsessed with him and having the wrong priorities in life when she had had a traumatic brain injury and had likely suffered permanent brain damage. It was also frustrating how he discussed traveling the world as something that was not significant- clearly he is unaware of his privilege and how the vast majority of people lack many of the resources that allowed him to live that way. I am also not anti-swearing by any means, but saying "fuck" literally every other word at times is honestly distracting and takes away from the meaning of the book. If you need to swear constantly, you're probably not a very good writer. When reading self help books, I would highly suggest looking into the credentials of the author (for example, this author has no formal education in psychology, self help or otherwise). Additionally, the narrator making his voice more high pitched when imitating women was frustrating. Would NOT recommend this book. Spend your money on a book written by someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

The book was fairly superficial with plenty of cliches and banalities. Writing style is pretty condescending, but there were a few funny jokes- therefore the extra star. The narrator probably accurately portrayed the douchy-ness of the author. Misogyny detected as well, especially towards the last part of the book. There are better ways to spend your time, so skip this book

Brilliant, poignant, thoughtful. Manson's words will slap you in the face with reality and humility, evoke deeper introspection, make you chuckle, and inspire you to stop getting in your own way.

Did not find it interested as the F word was used wayyyy to often. Quit after a few chapters

Not a big self-help book fan, in fact I straight up dislike self help books. But this one was at least worth a read. Manson calls the sugar-coated-fakery of North America as it is, a pile of crap. Of course, lot of people will not like it because they care too much about trivial stuff that other people do and say in everyday life. If you are the person who is offended by the amount of curse word used in this book, then this book is for you.

I was finding myself caring SO much that it was killing me... And then I would break and give up entirely... it was a constant pendulum swing for me. This book is all about choosing the things to care passionately about, accepting that things will never be perfect and finding the beauty in pain. I tell at least one person a day about this book because it is changing the way I live. #LifeChanging!

Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a realignment for your mind and soul. The book helps to think and prioritize what you should give a F*ck about and what you are not giving a f*ck about and does so in a meaningful and entertaining way. Read this book! Unless you don’t give a f*ck, then don’t.

Profile Avatar

Listened to this book, while working out in the gym. It was very intriguing that had many statements worth memorizing and/or quoting. Introverts that find themselves in an endless cycle of self evaluating and feeling the onset of depression, this is a great book to put things in perspective. Highly recommended!

Profile Avatar
Denny D.

Great perspective into our personal decision making. The last chapter can be a scary insight to what we should give a f*u k about in life. Narration was superb.

Profile Avatar

Now if only there was a way to get this message to my generation. There are barely any children that read books anymore. Shit I am almost out of high school, and the number of books I have ACTUALLY read is between 6-10... maybe not even that many. My point is that you should probably try to sell these insights to a television show to get people more around this idea. I'm only 17 and I am so sick and tired of the sappy sorry for myself bullshit that goes on around me in my daily life. PLEASE share this book to everyone you know. Make a difference. I see that the world isn't all rainbows and unicorns. Now only if my peers could see it as well, and didn't have everything handed to them as a kid, and only had to work for everything they have which is what I have done.

Profile Avatar

There were some good takeaways and I actually was riveted by his ending story and I now recognize that giving a f***about everything means you (yourself) can’t possibly give a f*** about a lot of things successfully. I found that I kept getting annoyed by his f*ing storytelling and redundancy of his use of the word f*ing which, I guess was used as a literary tool. So it is somewhat f*ing good.

I laughed while learning throughout this entire book. I've read WAY too many "self-help" books and I can say that this book, by far, is one of the most engaging and "fun" self-improvement / self-help books I've ever read. Thanks to this book, I have learned to embrace Disappointment Panda and accept his harsh but true words. This book has been life-changing and life-sustaining in a concrete way in a tough time in my life. Mark has really figured out a lot and, along with the tough love, is a warmth and compassion that keep it together.

Profile Avatar

Mark remains one of my favourite bloggers and apparently writers. I loved the sarcastic and in-your-face way of presenting information that is extracted from neuropsychology, buddhism and his own experience. He has a way of distilling valuable information in a way that is totally digestible and catchy. I would love for him to continue writing because he is so relatable and this may inspitr future generations that resonate with this style.

Profile Avatar

I enjoyed this book. I found it interesting and taught me how to act in certain situations in every day life. I’m not saying it’s changed my life, I just found it interesting and tried to introduce the subject matters in every day life. Unbelievably things that would normally annoy me were okay. I play poker at a reasonable level and I found that if I changed my way of thinking I could control my emotions during a game, for example if I’m in a position which I think is appropriate to bluff, it was up to me how I control my emotions not the game if that makes sense. All in all a good read and worth a download Andy x

Good points. Especially when you feel bad. Nothing is wrong with you. It's just the body telling you to do something about it and not to let it define you as boring or loser or whatever. And another one is about winning. You should want to win, but not let it define your success. I know sounds logical but he puts it in a better context..

Profile Avatar
Mohit N

My first experience with an Audio Book. Once you get past the proliferation of the f*** word and after a more than ferrous sprinkling in the beginning, you will get past it. The book is with the five hours. The take away is simple, easy to implement and truth be told, not something that one wasn't aware of before. Where the audio book scores is by ensuring one is made aware, is conscious of and internalises these learnings resulting in a real change in behaviour, conduct and decision making. Hence, the rating - for the book and the narration.

As someone who practices the philosophy that this book preaches I can tell you it really works. This book captures the very essence of living life in a meaningful manner without allowing the b*****ds to get you down. If life is getting to you and you have yet to read Mark Manson's book well start now as it will give you an insight into where you're going wrong. Usually it is because you care what people think about you, your car, the way you dress and how you speak etc. Just F*** 'em and enjoy the day, tomorrow is promised to no one. Now stop pissing moaning and go get this book.
