Summary:

'The perfect binge listen.' — Yahoo Lifestyle

Instant #1 New York Times bestseller.

This program includes a bonus interview with the author.

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

More praise for The Silent Patient:

“Absolutely brilliant… I read it in a state of intense, breathless excitement.” — Stephen Fry

“Smart, sophisticated storytelling freighted with real suspense - a very fine novel by any standard.” — Lee Child

“The Silent Patient sneaks up on you like a slash of intimidating shadow on a badly lit street. Michaelides has crafted a totally original, spellbinding psychological mystery so quirky, so unique that it should have its own genre.” — David Baldacci

Author did not need the overuse of vulgarity...he needed more confidence in his writing ability.

I really REALLY disliked this book. The plot is hugely unrealistic and reads like a Hollywood script, the characters are one dimensional and unlikeable, and the writing itself is poor. After googling I discovered that the author is a film writer and that is exactly how this is written. While I enjoyed the female narrator and feel she did an excellent job, the male narrator puts on a suggestively unpleasant voice from the beginning. I had difficulty tolerating his obnoxious tone.

This book got me through the holiday drudgery! Fascinating story artfully narrated…with suspense and clever twists.

This book is so mundane and formulaic. I would put this squarely in the category of ‘attempted screenplay’, meaning it’s trying really hard to be a movie but just lacks all the depth and skill one requires. How does this get a single good review??

It has a bit of a slow start. The psychological mystery was enjoyable, but the ending was predictable and it didn't quite live to the hype.

I thought the book was ok but didn’t hold my attention. I had to rewind on occasion. I wouldn’t recommend it. However the narrator did a good job.

The Silent Patient was simply amazing. I pride myself on being able to think ahead and figure out what will happen through to the ending. I am pretty good at it but Michaelides totally stunned me. I actually slapped the sides of my face “Home Alone” style. I had absolutely no idea where this book was going or how it would conclude. Beyond that delicious surprise, the book is well written, the narrators were very good, and I was so engaged in the story that I binge listened and finished it in less than 3 days. Then I went back to the big reveal and simply had to read that part again. It will be hard to pick my next psycho thriller because this one was so fabulous.

Great story. The narration was also quite pleasant. I expected a twist at the end, but never expected THAT twist.

  • Jessica B.

I enjoyed this book very much. The twists are interesting and I love the psychological and artistic aspects of it, I wish more writers used them. The narrators did a wonderful job,and the change between the male and female voices were not so drastically different like some with one louder than the other and such. I can’t wait to hear the next book

Excellent choice for my first audio book. I couldn't stop listening! What a twist, was not expecting it.

Slow, WAY to descriptive, the words “as if” and “like the” could be made into a drinking game in this book. I didn’t care for the dual narration, the man was ok, but the woman got on my nerves for some strange reason.

I really liked this book. it kept me on edge almost the whole time.

  • Anonymous

it's was okay. I got rather boring many times throughout the book. the were parts were I found myself not paying attention. However, the stars are for the twist at the end. Although I found myself not really enjoying the abrupt way it ended. Thrillers are usually not my thing, and I think it will stay that way.

  • Anonymous

Very good book! Was well read and I was making masks during listening and found myself stopping the sewing machine to hear what was next. Not very productive or a great multi-tasker.

    twist after twist.

  • Laura S.

Really enjoyed this book. Did not expect the ending and thought it was a great twist that just made you think “wow!”

  • Linda M.

I loved this book! The story is interesting from its beginning and leads the reader down all sorts of dead-ends (in a good way) and the twist at the end was totally unpredictable. The author creates very real characters, especially those of the "patient" and the protagonist. If you are looking for a story that carries you along and makes you want to know how it will end, this is for you; but it won't be the end that you may be expecting! Having two people narrate the story was a great idea. Both narrators were excellent.

  • Kathy L.

Really enjoyed this mystery. Narrator was easy to follow.

  • Jamie K.

This was a solid piece of writing. I enjoyed the twists and surprises. The narrators were fantastic and captured the personalities of the characters well.

This book should be a requirement to all those that work with some type of care giving

  • Dizzy Dreamer

I didn't know what to expect from this book. a friend recommended it and the only thing that was told to me was there was a crazy twist at the end. The book kept me engaged the entire time. The two narrators had dealt nice and fluid voices. The story is not a typical one and even though the twist came out at like the last 10 minutes of the entire book, it was still really good.

  • Kim G.

Very suspenseful! Caught me by surprise! Excellent narration.

  • Ursula Berliner

Best book I've read in ages!

  • Victoria Cox

The twist at the end was great!

  • Erika K.

Thrilling, page turning and a bit chilling.. this was a fantastic book from start to finish

  • NumbersMcFarlen

Started this book right after listening to Mexican Gothic, which ruined the narration a bit. Would have been a better audio experience if Daniel Radcliff was the narrator - but I understand he was probably too busy. :p I was also able to call the twist halfway into the book. Still really entertaining otherwise.

  • Bianca1976

It was so slow at the beginning but the ending twist made it somewhat better. I definitely think this read like a script for a movie. Can totally see this becoming a movie of some type.

  • Lori E.

Loved it and how it all came together in the end.

  • Rosanna

This is a slow burn thriller and I was surprised that I did enjoy this pacing. The novel gives you a chance to get to know it’s characters and I came to care about what happens to the protagonist in this story.I was surprised by the twist ending and I didn’t see it coming.

  • beckaboo2u

I was pleasantly surprised that the book was narrated by two people from their perspectives (and both narrators were very good, was to listen to). The way the two stories eventually intertwine while still maintaining an air of mystery made it captivating to listen to. Ending was great. A very easy read.

  • Anonymous

This was a surprising psychological thriller and the ending was unexpected! I highly recommend this book!

  • Tori W.

amazing book! Could not stop listening and would recommend to anyone that like psychological thrillers.

  • Kay B.

I really enjoyed this book. I drove Across the Country and this was my favorite book to listen to. It moved quickly through but still included lots of details. The story had fun twists and made my drive ho quickly. The narrators were both really good. They had English accents but were still easy to understand. Great book!

  • Julia G.

I haven’t finished it yet, but so far the book has so much suspense. The author craftily weaves the story together in such a way that your assumptions about the end change many times. I would have liked a little less profanity but that’s just me. So far it’s a great book. 10/10 read!

  • AmberCM

I loved this book. It wasn’t what I expected at all by listening to the sample but I really enjoyed it. Narration was great as well. I’ll probably listen to this one again in the future.

  • Jules

Really enjoyed this book. Definitely surprised at the end. Both Narrators were great. I’ve listened to Louise Brealey before. Can’t remember which book.

  • Kerstin B.

Great story, narrator had a bit of trouble keeping accents consistent.

  • Deborah S.

meh...i listened because I liked the female narration. plot was thin

  • Bess H.

It was ok. Some areas were too slow moving.

  • Gayle S.

I escaped into the story and my exercise walks became longer than planned. Poor dog.... Loved the narrator's rhythm and pronunciation.

  • Luann P.

Didn't see it coming in the end...great story!

  • Anonymous

For me, the ending was predictable. But it was a good read, nevertheless.

  • Melissa B.

Very exciting. It kept my interest the whole time.

  • Maureen D.

This book just didn’t do it for me. I kept wondering who the killer was. When I found out...BAM the story ended. I felt angry with the subtle ending.

  • Roger C.

    Wonderful read. full of suspense

  • Jacqueline B.

took several weeks as I only listen on my walks with the dog. This is my 1st experience with a whole audio book. I have tried audio books before but the narrator always put me off. It was the narrator's voice that first drew me into this book. The book was OK but I felt the end could have shorter or even edited so the last passage at end could have been even more of a shock to hear.

  • Nia R.

I hate when male narrators pretend to be female characters, please hire women for women’s roles. The only female voice was grating, breathy land babyish, off putting. I liked the twist, but some parts just felt like overly long monologues.

  • Zani T.

Good book. Nice twist at the end.

  • Sarah W.

Excellent book! Enjoyed it from the beginning to the end!

  • Kitty R.

    great novel

  • Dan M.

I enjoyed it and it was a good twist at the end - but I was thrown off a bit by the way he misled you by the time line. He writes the end as if things are happening in the present tense when it is really happening in the past.

  • Shirley W.

Lots of twists and turns. Liked the male and female narration.

  • Jamie D.

Absolutely loved this book. I was hooked from the first 5 mins. The ending was crazy

  • Stacy P.

I purchased the audiobook and it didn't disappoint! The narrator did an excellent job of pulling me in from the very first page and holding me until the end. The story left me wanting more! Maybe a sequel, Mr. Michaelides!?!?

  • Linda A.

Amazing book! Character development was rich; intertwining stories kept me on edge of seat. And then the end!! A must read!!

  • Camomilia B.

Reading it for book club this month. Maybe it is a British thing or a relic from when the author worked in a hospital, but no one in this book, with the possible exception of Bonnie, is even close to having borderline personality disorder. We have a good friend with it and can now fairly easily recognize it. I liked that the narrator read fast as I typically listen on VLC so I can play it at 1.3-1.8 speed.

  • William D.

I chose this book on a whim and I was pleasantly surprised. The story is engaging and I liked the suspense. I also liked the style of both narrators. I would recommend it.

  • Duanae R.

This book was good. I didn’t see the ending coming. It definitely got better as the book went along. I think maybe it could have been a little better with a different narrator. I found the narrator to read extremely fast. I felt like he was in a hurry to get it read. I would still recommend this read. I did like it!

  • Dena M.

    Excellent read. Kept you listening.

I’m not finished yet, I have about 3 hrs left. I find this book not very eventful and therefore not very interesting. I see numerous posts about the twists and turns, but I’ve yet to really hear much suspense. If it’s all at the very end, it is a long listen to only enjoy the ending.

  • Eileen S.

Loved this book!!! The format , all the twists.

I loved this audiobook! It was engaging and kept me interested on my commute. Both narrators did an excellent job of switching tone for different characters and overall I found it to be a great use of time in the car. Well written story wonderfully narrated. Couldn’t stop listening as I had to know the ending. Great interview bonus at end too. Really enjoyed.

  • Stephanie K.

This book was extremely slow to get going. I wasn’t interested until the last 90 minutes. And there was far too many holes in the plot to make sense. The twist at the end was good, but very unrealistic. So if someone can listen without thinking “That would never happen”, then they will do OK. The narrator had a lovely voice that was very easy to listen to. And thank goodness for that, because the first 4 hours of the story were painfully slow to keep going.

  • Anonymous

Too many unbelievable holes. IV Morphine then able to write pages in her diary before she passes out? Really?

  • Jenna C.

Very impressed with this book. The storyline is captivating and I couldn’t stop listening.

The plot twist in this book caught me completely by surprise. I can usually tell ahead of time where a plot is going but not this time. A true psychological thriller. Enjoyed every minute of it!

    Loved the entire book.

  • Jacqueline E.

As close to a perfect read as one can get. Know matter how good you think you are at solving and guessing the ending, you will never see this one coming. Ordered it as a gift for a good friend the minute I finished it. Loved it!

  • Kimberly W.

LOVED, LOVED this book!! Honestly was looking forward to my commute to work just to listen to more! Great twist at the end and great narration.

  • Andrea J.

I listen to this book on tape and it was riveting especially with the narrator’s ability to have different voices which really made the characters seem real and come alive. It is a very good whodunit mystery and I was surprised at the very ending which is exactly what I want when I’m listening to an audiobook. I 100% recommend this for anyone who wants a great reader to keep them occupied on a long drive or at the beach or wherever. Be prepared to not get much done while reading this book because you will not want to put it down. I promise.

  • Josue G.

excellent book. the twists were wonderful and the narration was great

Love, Love, Love! The narration and evolving story were both awesome! ♥️ I could not stop listening!!! WOW!

  • Jillian R.

I was hooked from start to finish. Great listen!

  • Laura N.

The book itself was very good: psychotherapy is a subject of great interest to me and I learned a lot from the insights of the main character. The twists were unexpected. I wasn’t keen on the narrators though, and found the male narrator’s attempts at portraying the different characters and their accents somewhat off putting.

  • Sam B.

GREAT BOOK. Keeps your interest the whole way through. Narrator(s) are awesome and the book is wonderfully written. If you like suspense, this is for you!!!

  • Sharlene D.

I really enjoyed this book. The narration was also very good.
