Unabridged Audiobook
A wretched piece of Manifest Destiny propaganda, a example of bald-faced unapologetic American exceptionalism. And just arrogant to argue that historians have neglected early Ohio--they haven't.
This was a pretty good book; however, audible is the way to go because the information is dry at times. Learning about an historical time that is usually glossed over in most American History survey courses was very satisfying. I especially enjoyed the correspondence between various figures because they gave such a flavor of the time and the beauty and skill of letter writing is a lost art in the modern world of emails.
History is very interesting but relies heavily on letters which are recited verbatim.
Brilliant, educational, enthralling. That
A fantastic book brimming with historical detail and analysis. The Pioneers covers early American settlement in Ohio while also provides insights into the first years of the country. Significant use of primary sources from a wide range of peoples allows for an unbiased and clear picture of the many people and events that feature in the book. The narrator has a clear and easily understandable speaking voice throughout. The only criticism is that the book focus almost exclusively on Ohio. Potential readers should be aware that the book does not cover other pioneering eras in American history, something that is not immediately apparent from the title. Overall this was an enjoyable and enlightening listen and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the period.
Although he did a lot of research, this is poorly written and disjointed, lacks continuity.
Having enjoyed the author's previous works I was very excited about having another opportunity to enjoy one more fine work. Unfortunately, this was a boring read.
Incredible information presented in a way that reads like a story. I loved it. David McCullough is a master at this.
