Pulitzer Prize Finalist | New York Times Bestseller | A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick | A New York Times Book Review Notable Book | TIME Magazine's 100 Must-Read Books of the Year

Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR, The Washington Post; O: The Oprah Magazine, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Vogue, Refinery29, and Buzzfeed

From Ann Patchett, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth, comes a powerful, richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.

The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.

Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of what they’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

A story about a sister who raised her little brother, from his point of view. A narrative of emotions from comfort to bewilderment to anger. A tale told just like that - a spoken tale, not a novel read.

Profile Avatar
James V.

Loved it ! Not a story I have heard before and just great , played it 4 times while on our European Christmas vacation .Add Tom Hanks , what’s not to love

Profile Avatar
Jodi L.

This was a very interesting story, with such detail and descriptive picture telling that as a reader made me feels like I could smell feel and visually take in the story on every page. Having Tom Hanks narrate this kept me engaged which I think had I just been reading this I may have drifted off a little as it’s a very slow moving book. Needless to say the story unravels really well as you get into it and for the most part this is a phenomenal healing book to read if you, like me have suffered from ups and downs and deep family relationship drama that needs time for forgiveness to set in and anger and resentment to release. Like a fine bottle of wine, the flavors of this book are truly appreciated over 30 or more years of life you read through and that feel good moment at the end was well worth it. The inclusion of detailed portraits and a sense of different families lived through one home to next occupants was a very clever inclusion of which the author showcases really well and adds so much deeper appreciation. In some way this book also hinted on or could have been a home, a house, a life of one family to the next in Germany after the world war and yet it was an unusual home that the story centers around positioned on the East Coast of USA. I will certainly be imprinted a for a long time from this book.. inspired to paint more too, well done Ann. I feel like I know you after reading this. How strange to say that :) maybe we will meet someday. Marvelous work.

I will never listen to a book read by a famous actor again. I could only imagine Tom Hanks being cute and likable, instead of the character the author wrote. As for the novel itself, The story itself was extremely pedestrian, the writing was bland. But it’s a good enough listen while prepping dinner or waiting in line.

Really good book and very easy to listen to Tom. He doesn't necessarily separate each person through a completely different voice (which made it even better), but I loved the brother-sister relationship and how he kept a light-hearted and upbeat voice. I actually looked forward to hearing him say what chapter we were on because he was so cheery announcing each one.

Profile Avatar

The best part about this book was the narration by Tom Hanks! Amazing The story itself felt short for me. While the bond between the siblings was heartwarming, the rest of the characters were unimpressive. I kept waiting for some twist in the plot which never happened.
