Summary
In this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller, FBI Agent Atlee Pine returns to her Georgia hometown to investigate her twin sister's abduction, only to encounter a serial killer.
FBI Agent Atlee Pine's life was never the same after her twin sister Mercy was kidnapped -- and likely killed -- thirty years ago. After a lifetime of torturous uncertainty, Atlee's unresolved anger finally gets the better of her on the job, and she finds she has to deal with the demons of her past if she wants to remain with the FBI.
Atlee and her assistant Carol Blum head back to Atlee's rural hometown in Georgia to see what they can uncover about the traumatic night Mercy was taken and Pine was almost killed. But soon after Atlee begins her investigation, a local woman is found ritualistically murdered, her face covered with a wedding veil -- and the first killing is quickly followed by a second bizarre murder.
Atlee is determined to continue her search for answers, but now she must also set her sights on finding a potential serial killer before another victim is claimed. But in a small town full of secrets -- some of which could answer the questions that have plagued Atlee her entire life -- and digging deeper into the past could be more dangerous than she realizes . . .

I have hearing loss on one side and wear a hearing aid. I struggled with the female narrator talking too low. When I turned up the volume, I’d get blasted by the male narrator or the shouting of the female. It’s a constant increase/decrease game that I hate.

1st book on this series, I love mystery/crime books, but this was way too long, thought it would never end. Not familiar with the author, wondering if all his books are soooooo long. Maybe I will try again with hopefully will not be so long. Thought the woman who was narrating was very good. Would like to read more of what she's done.

I enjoyed the book. It was good. The women reader was good but I did not like the male reader. He had the same voice for all of the male parts. He voice was hard to know which person he was suppose to be when he talked. They all sounded alike whereas the female used her voice such as you could understand which female she was talking for.

Hate to say it, but, this by far the worst book by Baldacci I have ever read or listened to. Stilted, predictable, shallow dialogue and a protagonist that was completely cold, unlikable, and harsh. I ended up, early on, wanting the book to improve or simply end. Very disappointing.

I love Baldacci books. He is one of my favourites. I love the action and the plot twists and the way his books make me think, trying to reason who did the deeds. Kept me thinking until the end.

This was better than the first book, Road to Mercy, but needed to be longer. Now we have to wait for another sequel rather than just finishing the storyline of Atlee, Mercy and their parents.

Always amazes me how some mystery writers attempt to hide their poorly developed storyline with character saturation. Male narration was just a click above bad Clint Eastwood and Matlock impersonations.

Excellent book! Loved how David Baldacci kept the listener in suspense until the end!

Love the building of long term storyline alongside the one that gets solved at the end. Can't wait for the next Atlee Pine book
