Unabridged Audiobook
The narrator’s accent was a plus. It took me there.
This is one of the three or four best novels I’ve read this year. The Scottish brogue of the narrator fit perfectly with the text. I admit I did have to purchase a Kindle edition as well because I would never have appreciated the book otherwise, while I listened and followed the text. It was an outstanding gay coming of age story with all the violence of the mean streets of Glasgow in the 80s. What most LGBTQ people have to endure in being their true selves. Many never make it. I did in a different time and place. Thank you, Douglas Stuart, for writing this book.
There’s probably a good book here, but the narrator has a brogue so desperately thick that it is impossible to understand what the author has written. It might be authentic for the tale being told, but to these American ears, he is simply a distraction. The Lesson: Always listen to the Preview first to determine whether or not to invest the time and money. This was a waste.
