In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the OASIS, a vast virtual world where most of humanity spends their days.

When the eccentric creator of the OASIS dies, he leaves behind a series of fiendish puzzles, based on his obsession with the pop culture of decades past. Whoever is first to solve them will inherit his vast fortune—and control of the OASIS itself.

Then Wade cracks the first clue. Suddenly he’s beset by rivals who’ll kill to take this prize. The race is on—and the only way to survive is to win.

Absolutely loved this book! Great story for fellow nerds and any fans of 80s pop culture! Will Wheaton is such a great audio book narrator! I? don’t think anyone other than Will Wheaton could’ve brought this world to life!

This was flat out awesome and one of the best total "nerd-out" books ever. Wil Wheaton was perfect - anyone who disagrees is just flat out wrong. I have recommended this book, and this audiobook to everyone I know, and some random people on the elevator. Stop reading this and download this book RIGHT NOW!!

I thought the narration was great and the story itself was pretty decent. Definitely a book written by a boy for other boys. Indulgent in that manner, but still entertaining. Did anyone else see the parallel between "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and "Ready Player One". I don't think it took away from the story at all, but I mentioned it to a friend (this is now his favorite book of all time I guess) and he didn't see it. I thought they were almost the same story though.

One of the best books I've read. Read the book in 2016 and had to listen to the audio book! Wheaton is an awesome narrator . Halfway done with Armada as well with him as the narrator too. he's the best. RPO is amazing. I highly suggest to listen!

If you love the 80's, nerd things, and dystopian fiction, this is the perfect book for you. Stick it out at the beginning when it's mostly a review of 80's culture and a set-up fpr the futuristic world of technology, and you will be rewarded with a lot of plot twists and action. Wil Wheaton does a great job narrating as well!

The book is fantastic, especially if you grew up in the '80s like I did. It kills me to say that Wil Wheaton, although an excellent Wesley Crusher, may not be the best audiobook narrator due to his lack of vocal variety. Nearly all the characters sounded like a grown Wesley Crusher.

I enjoyed the narration, but otherwise, Ready Player One failed to impress. I won't harp on the strange game elements mentioned since such aren't really the focus in this book, but it is important to highlight how the game features constantly work in favor of the MC. The book suffers from failing to set a framework of rules for the VR game's various features. Everything just feels too convenient for the MC as a consequence. I think Ready Player One does well as a LitRPG (role playing game elements in literature) for children and young adults in many ways, but it panders to an older audience through its nostalgic 80's pop culture references. This results in great moments of nostalgia followed by the disappointment of a childish MC, surrounding cast, and general plotline. There are better LitRPG's out there to read like 'The Land: Founding', 'Awaken Online', and 'Survival Quest' all of which improve upon Ready Player One's formula.

I've re-read this book almost every year for the past 7 years. I still find new details or pickup on new references. Cline does an amazing job of capturing real human emotion. The highs feel genuinely elated. The lows are realistically dark. When I first read this book back in 2011 I was a high school nerdy guy. I never felt I related to any of the male leads in books like Artemis Fowl whose super-intelligent or Harry Potter who is super amazing at everything he does. I connected with Wade because amongst the fantasy and sci-fi of his journey he wrestled with real problems too.

Profile Avatar

First of all Will Wheaton missed his calling, one of the best narrations I’ve ever heard. I gave him five stars only because I’m couldn’t give him 10. Second, this book has been the most fun I’ve had listening to an audiobook in sometime. It’s so good I think I’m going to writing and go listen to it again.

The author built a great world, but he would have benefited from some stronger editing. Parts of the book are needlessly repetitive and awkward. The story had a great premise, but the ending was pretty standard. It was a fun read, but certainly not a masterpiece. Wil Wheaton was a great narrator for the book.

I had been told to check out the audiobook of this title in particular, and I'm so incredibly happy I did. Not only is this book itself a ton of fun, but Will Wheaton's vocal stylings really add the necessary character to help visualize the story without over-doing it.

Profile Avatar

Will Wheaton wins this book and worth the listen. The maddening part is the ongoing details of trying to explain something. To many words to explain something simple.

Profile Avatar
Paul S.

I would say this was definitely an inventive piece of science fiction. The expansive detail of gaming and cultural lore was impressive, much more impressive than the characters, who were more or less flat and predictable, just as they were in the far less impressive movie adaptation, which bore almost no resemblance to the book. I liked the book a lot more, but not being a gamer geek or film buff myself made enjoying the heavy doses of gaming scenes and film worship a little difficult, even though I still thought the author did a decent job of keeping a rube like me entertained throughout. There seemed to be a definite left-leaning political bend to Cline's opinions, and you get a nice gender switcheroo at the end, along with the obligatory shaming of the protagonist, who represents us the readers, for being a member of the evil patriarchy. After being properly cut down to size by the switcheroo character, who had been reasonably interesting as Wade's best friend until he/she is revealed to be the author's poltical lecturing diversity catch-all, Wade then proceeds to singlehandedly save the world anyway. I guess it was just important to save the world while knowing how much of a privileged little brat he is, even though he's an impoverished orphan whose only remaining family got nuked earlier in the book, his best friend has been lying to him for years about who he/she is, and the girl he loves seems to despise him, abuse him, and treat him like total crap for the duration of their magical romantic journey. Anyway, the movie adaptation did manage to avoid some of these woke agenda swipes, but then again the movie was a turd, so. Either way, if you have the stomach for being briefly pilloried and shamed, then the other non-political portions of this book are entertaining and inventive enough to make listening to it worth your time. Will Wheaton was cool as the narrator, but he kind of sucks as Will Wheaton.

This book isn’t completely awful but it’s also not nearly as great as the hype and ratings make it out to be. I’m an adult nerd who was a nerdy kid in the 80’s. From all the hype I expected to love this book, but I didn’t. The main character is a callow, selfish youth that doesn’t grow even a little as a person over the course of the book. How could anyone root for this guy to become a multiple billionaire with control over the civilization altering internet? My primary gripe with the book were: -the constant lists of pop culture name-drops, written like the author learned about 80’s culture from reading Wikipedia. Just lists to show off knowledge, very little world building or passion for the topic. -deus ex plot armor for the protagonist -faceless, one-dimensional villains -MC has a “love” interest that’s an unhealthy infatuation. He treats her like crap once he actually meets her and gets to know her. -Mediocre writing with low effort world building, poorly developed characters, balanced by excellent narration. If you’re going to get into this story at all, I recommend the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton.

Overall, a great listen. This book takes a semi-dystopian look at the not so future present?? It paints a picture of the outside world without dwelling on it too much. The main focus is what happens in the Oasis or the virtual world everyone spends all their waking hours in. The book plays out sorta predictably, but the details are hard to predict. The details are where this book actually shines. The whole book revolves around intricate details about the late 70’s, all of the 80’s and even a few details into the 90’s. Anyone who grew up in these decades will recognize most if not all of these references. The younger and future generations will likely not get them, but will more likely relate with the Oasis itself and people’s interactions within it. Overall its a good and exciting read. Paced fairly quickly. A little predictable in parts and overall. Still fun to read and hear the references back to my childhood. Will does a pretty good job reading it. He seems to start off a little slow and clunky and then really finds his groove and pacing. The end of the book is where his reading really shines. Beyond that it’s fun having the book read by one of its pop references. I would recommend this book.

I probably won't like it as much as the book, but I'm hoping I like and understand the movie even more now.

Profile Avatar

Reading after finally watching the movie, I found the book an improvement on the story, world, and characterisation. I did not mind the descriptiveness of the world and 80s references, as it's likely not everyone would know all of them. And, the overall pacing and progression of the book made for a fun and compelling adventure.

I really like this book. I liked the story (Goblet of Fire meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). I liked at the 80's references, although there was a point where Wade was literally listing off songs, or movies, or something for the longest time. I preferred the more integrated references than having Wade just rattle on about James Halliday's favorite (insert 80's theme subject). To me, it really slowed down the momentum of the story. Regardless the book had an overall great pace, I finished this book in two days, and I'll probably listen to it again. The characters were great, my favorite was Wade. I could definitely relate to his backstory. Will Wheaton was a really good narrator, he really added to the story, flawless. Despite my small, nit-picky, critiques I give Ready Player One five stars. This is a good book for anyone just getting into audiobooks.

Profile Avatar
Anne B

Be ready to absorb some context and world building at the start-- a little slow, but so very worth it. Really great story that made me proud to have grown up in the 80s as a nerd. Pace was good, characters were huggable, I felt true suspense multiple times. Narrator, Wil Wheaton (Wesley on Star Trek TNG) was outstanding.

Profile Avatar
Tes l

This book was amazing!!! It had all of the elements needed for a great book. The character development allows the reader to go on the journey and care what happens to the people. Although born in 1979, I was a little young for some of the references, I got enough and what I didnt get, I looked up. I was so addicted to the book, when I finished I managed to find an old pizza parlor with the steep A-frame building, wood paneled walls and about 20 old arcade games. After finishing Ready Player One, I was in need of more narration by Wil Wheaton and found Armada, also by Cline. It gave me what I was looking for, but was almost like Ready Player One Lite. It is always great to find good books like this that are a roller coaster and are able to take me on an adventure. With the inclusion of VR and the Oasis, it allowed for anything to be possible, but still in a real worls scenario unlike most fantasy.

This is now become one of my favorites of all time! As someone who favors more “traditional” books such as the Sherlock Holmes stories or most books by Ernest Hemingway, I was never really into Sci-fi type works. This was a fun read...and I grew up in the 80s. I'm older, and not a nerd or gamer. I can't wait to see the movie! Will Wheaton brought this book to life. I almost feel sorry for people who will ONLY see the movie

Profile Avatar
Fritz H

Has some good developments, but fails to tie the concepts together and kinda just ends rather than completing. A lot of the early rants the lead goes through are rough as well, and needless the say the romance was garbage as tends to be the case with this sorta work. Once it buckled down and focused on the actual premise however it was much smoother sailing. Definitely a good idea in here, but it's one of those things you'll likely see better realized in supplementary works. Here's hoping the movie ties things together a bit better.

Profile Avatar

The book was better than I expected. The references were on point and made me feel like a kid again every time one was made. I loved the world that Ernest Cline created and even I didn't want to leave the OASIS. Wil Wheaton was a pleasant surprise. I did not realize he was the narrator until after I purchased the book, and I must say, I would not have wanted anyone else to have narrated the story. I immensely enjoyed both the story and Wil Wheaton's narration of it.

Profile Avatar

Prior to taking up this book, I wasn’t sure how engaged I’d be in listening to an audio book because I’m usually unable to stay interested based on the narrator’s voice. Wheaton’s narration, however, was a really relatable voice that kept this book engaging and heartfelt. He really gave life to this story and I was able to finish this book sooner than I would have on my own. Now I’m checking out some of the other works he’s narrated, as well as taking top rated narrators more seriously. Listening to people like this is really meditative in their own ways. As for the book, it was a really fun adventure that brought out and talked about some of the coolest things of that decade. I’m really anticipating the film and hoping for the best.

This is a really solid book. Does a great job of keeping the action going and making you guess along the way. If you know the 80s well then I highly recommend it but even if you don't it is still very entertaining. Narrator is good for obvious reasons.

Loved it!! Born in the 90s and didn’t get all the references, but still great. I didn’t want it to end.

A great futuristic story mixed with some ability to reminisce on my 80's teen years. Music, movies, games and all brought me back. I guess I never realized that I was a nerd in the 80s but if the author is right I was a raging nerd.

Great book. I couldn’t stop I had to know what happened. And Wil Wheaton as a crushing fan I was completely engrossed.

That was undoubtedly one of the fastest “reads” I’ve done for an audiobook! Fun and engaging story and Wil Wheaton is a wonderful choice. Hits home for any 80s child but particularly those like me of the old school arcade gaming genre. I smiled many times listening at all hours of the read. Enjoy!!

I liked this book and the narrator was great, but the crass language was not appreciated nor did it add anything beneficial to the book.

Poor storytelling with so much "telling" and very little "showing." Felt like the author just wanted to brag about how much obscure 80's trivia he knew. A lot of sexism, and some very strange racism as well in regards to the two Japanese characters. Gave me the impression the author's knowledge of the culture was from the 80's too, and not in a good way. Overall a painful experience with little reward.

Growing up in the 80’s AND being from Middletown Ohio i could hardly put it down. I knew every game and movie reference. Though the Middletown places weren’t exact I could picture a close stand in. Will always does a great good and this was one of his best.

The main character makes not one misstep the entire book. He's just good at everything. There's no tension, and never a moment where he seems legitimately in danger of not succeeding. Also the way he emotionally processes certain events is almost laughable. But that being said, this book is a lot of fun. It's just candy. And you need that sometimes. Just turn your brain off and enjoy the reference fueled ride. The narration is fun and full of conviction.

An amazing story of 80s nostalgia and gaming. This was a great book and I will read it many more times.

Great book but I found some of the writing a bit sophomoric. The ending in particular belonged more in a teen romance novel than a sci-fi/adventure title. Overall, an extremely entertaining book & concept.

The story was good, but some parts were redundant when listening to the book.

This is a really good listen. Loved all of the pop cultural references, great narration. The story was really creative and it really kept me interested in the plot all the way through. I would definitely recommend but I don't think this book is everyone's cup of tea.

This was the first book I listened to on Audiobooks, although I have gotten a lot of audiobooks from the library, and I thought it was awesome. Now I'm hooked. The narrator was very, very good. The story surprised me in that it seemed in some ways targeted to a younger audience, but, all of the references to 80's culture made it very interesting for an older listener like myself too. I liked the fact that I could be listening to it in the same room with my daughter and not worry about her hearing anything inappropriate and bad language. All in all it was a fun book and a good book to start with.

This was one of the best books and narrators I've listened too. I was born in the 60's so I loved the references to my childhood. Wil Wheaton did a fantastic job of telling this story. Highly recommend.

I didn't grow up in the 80s, so I didn't get a lot of the references but they were explained enough that I could still follow the story. Actually, this is such a good read (or listen) that it's probably now one of my favorite books. I was always excited to find out whats going to happen and how our protagonist will solve the puzzles. I love that most of the story happens in the video game world where all sorts of crazy stuff is possible.

The story itself is amazing for any game lover and fan of 80's pop culture. To have Will Wheaton as the narrator an icon of the Era just made the story that much better.

I.....freaking.....loved this book I never knew I could be thrown into a wave a nostalgia like this and I was hooked from the very start. the character development of wade was phenomenal and the change he made from the puffy kid just wanting to play games turning into someone That's got something to lose is what made me appreciate this character. I'm seriously glad this is getting turned into a film, the amount of detail that went into 80s references was phenomenal and the gaming pop culture closes the generational gap that old and new gamers had. over I'd give this thing 200 stars if I could, definitely my favorite book by far.

I was very surprised to find that I liked this story! I am not a gamer, but I did grow up in the 80s, so I was intrigued by the constant references to pop culture, not just the games. I originally picked it up to judge if it would be a good read for my 14 yes old son, but while the book seemed a bit immature for me/a griwn adult (the main character IS a teen), I also feel some of the mature content us a bit too mature. Maybe be can read it in HS. . .

a very juvenile book . written for a 16 yr old. excessive verbiage which reminded me of having to write a paper that had to be a certain amount of pages and we had to fill it with garbage to make the amount .

Wil Wheaton's narrative is perfect for this story. As a testament to how well done the whole thing is, in fact, I'll disclose this: I stayed up 'til 2:30 AM last night to finish it because I *had* to know how it ended. It's rare that I do that. So, yeah. Download it. Listen. Enjoy. And get pumped for the upcoming movie!

One of the best audiobooks of 2015, it's epic. Wil Wheaton is a superb narrator, the story will entrance any listener as they time warp back to the 1980's and all things futuristic-yet awesomely video geek related. I can't wait for Armada, also narrated by Wheaton. This book is f****** awesome! A MUST!

This book was maddening for me. On the one hand, I felt the writing was often very juvenile. Things worked out for the protagonist entirely too often, with phraes like "Luckily, I was already an expert in this thing I had no idea I needed to know" thrown around a lot. The references were very heavy handed, and at times the depicted society of the future was a bit too unbelievable. On the other hand, though, I kept wanting to listen. I kept coming back. I listened in the car for the four minutes it takes to get groceries and didn't want to get out of the car. I was engrossed. If you can get past some of the weaknesses in the writing, this is a fun book to while away the hours

This is my favorite book of the last year. It incorporates so many pop culture references from my youth, and builds an imaginative virtual world called OASIS with the elements. It's an edge of your seat kind of audiobook, and I found myself sitting in my car even after reaching my destination in order to find out what was going to happen next. Highly recommended to fans of video games, technology, and 80s culture in general!
